I'm a newbie and I've read about spam which I interpret to be an automatic response to something - which is why sites ask you to type in a sequence of letters to continue or to log in from a confirmation email. Is that right?

I've just read a thread which offers you loads of facebook contacts but they say don't spam them. I've also read 'don't include spam' in other posts. What does this mean? Is it blatently trying to sell something on a social networking site or a discussion forum that doesn't encourage selling?

Are there any other forms of spam to avoid - I don't want to be blacklisted at my first attempt!

Spam is generally advertising links in a way that is undesirable to people. For example, the e-mails you get advertising pharmacies and all of that stuff .

Sites ask you to type in letters to prevent spammers from making accounts and posting links to things. Spammers often use automated programs to do that, which is why they ask you to type in a few letters to stop the automated programs.

As a general rule, I would avoid buying 'packages' of links or links that were generated in an automated fashion. I think Google can detect the footprint.

Thanks, I wasn't planning to buy a list, just quoting that as somewhere that said 'don't send them spam'.

I am more curious about how I can avoid spamming people. What would I do that people would consider as spam?
