I seriously messed up my website - In need of help!

O.k I've managed to screw up my website tonight.

I'm using wordpress but I think I've messed up the code or something ( I don't know much about HTML )

I spent ALOT of time building an Amazon review page. I've just been back & forward to the page doing some tweaking as I build back links. I thought it would be a good idea to add a Google xml site map so I got some HTML code from google but I stupidly added it to the top of my review page which I wasn't suposed to do.

Well this screwed the page up & everything was all over the place so I copied all the text from the page & pasted it into note pad to clean it up. I went back & pasted the text into the page to start rebuilding it.

I faced another problem – I kept getting a double space/paragraph when I press return & I couldn't fix it so I deleted the page again & pasted all the text onto note pad. In note pad a scrunched all the text up so there was no spaces between each paragraph. I then pasted back into wordpress & this fixed the double paragraph problem.

But something else went wrong & it's driving me crazy! Now when I press return to add a space between each paragraph everything looks fine but when I update/publish the text just scrunches back up. I can't get it to leave a space between each paragraph.

I'm hoping this can be fixed & I've not completely messed it up. I'm trying to keep cool.

It's been a hard day...

    Thanks for the replys.

mkterbynite - thanks for your great offer but I don't have Skype. I'll drop Istvan a PM to see if he can give me any pointers. If I'm unsuccessful with that maybe you could have a look at it for me. That would be great.

Gary - Thanks for the link.

    1. Even for me, being a plugin minimalist, the G. map plugin is an excellent solution - you shouldn't ever mess with the code, especially if lacking the understanding of HTML/PHP.
    2. Not entirely clear: did you add the code to a template file or right into a Page/post while editing that? You should never do the latter...

Hmmm... You shouldn't do that! If a post/Page... entry of any type is screwed up big time - just delete it. And rewrite it.

Maybe all that code that you copied over repeteadly screwed up the settings of the editor. Especially, if you use the monster called "Visual editor"...
Normally, when you write a post/Page
    Enter = new paragraph
    Shift+Enter = new line break
    That's the default setting.

if Istvan's suggestion to delete the page/post you were
      working on does not work?

a good idea would be to manually ftp the theme template
and choose to over-write everything. I only say this as it
sounds like you may have been in the theme editor, and
once you mess up any files there? the only option is to
      reinstall them.

hope you get things back to normal.

I don't have a lot to add to this except to say that he's right - AVOID the visual editor at all costs! Even if you have to take a week to learn basic HTML, the time and frustration that will save you is well worth it!

Maybe you can just reinstall a fresh version of the file you messed up and restore the content?

      Best wishes on this.

I would remove the cod eyou just added then get the google xml sitemap plugin it will build your sitemap for you and you will not have to bother with the coding. It will also update every time you make a post.

Also note if you are in html mode when your are trying to add the content. You need to make sure that you add in the <p> and </p> after each paragraph. Where if you where just using the main text doc you can just hit enter and it will already add in this code for you. Hope that helps.

Nonsense. Sorry! You don't need to add any <p> - who told you that? Ask your money back whoever taught you in that way.

Just hit Enter twice and you have a new paragraph (in html editor).

Istvan Yes I pasted the code Google gave me into my “page” - I know stupid mistake.

This messed everything up so I removed the code but things still weren't right so I just deleted everything on the page & pasted some saved text back in to start rebuilding it.

I was still having problems though. I was getting double spaces between each paragraph then it wasn't letting me make any spaces between each paragraph.

I did quite a bit of playing around trying to fix it myself but I think I made things worse.

I've had another look this morning & I've noticed when I click the cursor onto the text at the bottom left had corner ( In visual mode ) it says Path: div

When I move to HTML mode at the beginning & end of every sentience/paragraph it has a <div> tag.

When I look at other pages on my site I don't seem to have the <div> tag. On visual mode the bottom left hand corner says Path: P

Hopefully this is clearer & there's a way to fix it. If not then deleting the page is a great suggestion Istvan – Don't know why I didn't think of that.

I'd prefer to fix than delete if that's possible.

Thanks for all the suggestion & suport on this everyone.
