When doing keyword research, what's your threshold?

I'm curious what threshold of searches per month you look for in a specific niche? Let's say you only look for keywords that have under 5,000 monthly searches or do you go for less.

Have you found success sticking with a certain amount? or do you only look at the competition to determine if you can win a #1 ranking?

I'm working on some niche sites now and I'd like to really narrow down a keyword or two and focus my time in those areas.

Thanks!

    Hey Jay,
If you go for the long tail keywords (specific variations of a one or two word keyword phrase), the number of searches is bound to be less and competition proportionally less too. There could be exceptions where there can be a high search count and low competition in which case you are very lucky

Generally a keyword with search count of 1000 per month with competiton between 14K and 20K is a good heuristic to start with. Once you rank well for your niche long tail keywords, you can then develop content on your site targeting the more competitive two word keyword phrases and over time, you should rank well provided you develop some good backlinks as well.

There is no written rule as far as threshold values go. Pick your niche and analyze that market and go for gold

I use Market Samurai, my criteria are 1000+ daily searches. I don't really mind how many competing sites are there, I rather look at the strengths and weaknesses of the top 10.
