    Hi,

When you buy the domain pay extra for the privacy feature.

That's a new one on me. I always thought that privacy kept it private period. Might be worth checking to further.

I always buy my domains through Godaddy because they have a Privacy Service.

I think most registrars offer privacy these days. Some offer it for free, some for a low cost, and with some it costs as much or more than the domain name. You might want to check out the price after the first year to determine the best long term value ... unless, of course, you have other reasons for buying a domain name from a particular registrar.

That's my understanding as well, George. I've never heard of privacy not working all the way through the system. It would be worthless and silly if it didn't. There would be no point to it, so I don't doubt that it works as intended/expected.

Ok now im not saying that anyone on here is wrong...but in doing my research i came across this on another sites forum:

"Most private registrations will keep it private within their system interface only. All you need to do is use another service to get the who is info. I know there is a bill in congress to make it illegal to falsify whois data but can't remember if it passed.

Think of whois like registering a company name. It's public info. That's part of doing an online business. Best way around this is to have a friend or partner to register on your behalf."

    and

"i think anyone with a some good knowlege can find who registered anyway... it`s never 100% anonimous"

Im not saying their correct...but I personally don't know how it works hence my post...but that's what started the whole ball rolling for me in my vacant little head lol...

Danny, did they give an example of a compromised privacy protected registration? A lot of times people just pass on information in forums that they've heard or read before, without really knowing if the information is correct.

I don't have any privacy protected domains to test. Unless someone offers proof, I'd be inclined to take that info with a grain of salt.

Please take no offense to this Dennis, because none is meant, but the only proof that anyone really ever has really is their word for the situation (at least really in a forum / thread format )...

No offense taken, but proof in this case would be easy. Show a domain listed as private with the original registrar, then show a registrar where the contact information for that domain is available. I don't think you'll find any, and I doubt if anyone who has ever leveled that charge has offered any proof. I would guess someone speculated on it once, and someone else retold the tale as fact and it grew from there. Just my opinion, but I sure wouldn't worry about my contact information being revealed by a different registrar.

See Mark's (DogScout) answer for a more definitive explanation.

GoDaddy is free privacy if you buy 5 qualifying domains. Some domains cannot be private due to regulation. Privacy DOES work thru the whole system, the only back-tracking that can be done is who the registrar is based on who the privacy company is. Privacy falls with-in ICANN's requirements as the privacy company forwards all contact to the owner. Until new regulations are decided upon, the current system for 'most' registrars works fine. (Nothing will keep a sufficiently powerful entity from following TCP packets and discerning site ownership that way.) Also using any stats, like Google analytics (as well as other tools) opens other holes that may allow someone to find who owns a site, but not through the privacy feature.
