Is social network marketing not a good idea?

I was told that social networks (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) are not good to use for marketing a website because people do not go there to make purchases and if I get traffic from those places it would not be relevant traffic.

I thought the idea, though, was to get links back to my website so that my website moves up in the searches.

Has anyone had success with social network marketing or would I be wasting my time with it?

on one hand, social media traffic doesn't convert as well as other traffic (in my opinion only) but its second-to-none if you want to connect with your followers in real time.

i think its very important to see your social media followers as your list to a certain degree, where you need to work extra hard to build a relationship of trust before they buy from you.

once you build that rapport, they certainly will trust you enough to buy and i've had brilliant sales via twitter & facebook from connecting with my followers and just being myself.

it's much more of a subtle sell than anything else.

links on facebook etc won't really help with your rankings btw.

I recently read or heard the you tube is probably the best place to drive traffic. According to one guru (Jeff Johnson) people are really starting to go to you tube to do there searches. So if you make a video and get your viewers to do a call of action back to your money site or how ever you want to get them in your sales funnel. You can also seo for your you tube vids. When you use Google to search you will notice that more and more vids are on the first page of Google.

I am going to give you my 2 cents, I am marketing on the internet to make money, not all the times I am promoting my own products, furthermore I want my clients to buy, the relationship I have with them is through my email auto responder, there I sent them gifts, news, encouragement etc... any other media is more distractive than anything else.

For me most of social media (twitter, facebook, myspace, etc..) is like a party where you just go to have fun, if you sell there you become the party pooper and people dont pay any attention to your message, unless you transform your service/product into a "party" you wont get a lot on the social media.

Thanks again to everyone. It sounds like the majority agrees with the guy who told me social network marketing wasn't a good idea. He also said that social networks were to socialize - not sell.

Maybe it depends on how much time you have to build relationships or on what you're selling or both?

I'm not sure where I got the idea that social network marketing would help with link building. I think a marketing coach told me that.

    anifunk,

Its really not the source of traffic that matters, its the method. Yeah, if all you do is push your links and your offers you will not get a good amount of targeted traffic that converts well. If your promotional efforts are done properly you could bank off of FaceBook traffic alone.

    Kind Regards,
