How I halved my unconfirmed Opt-ins

I should have done this much earlier but I just put a
huge picture of the opt-in message on my "thank you"
page with a yellow highlight, a big red arrow and a
caption box showing the confirm link in the message.

5 Minutes well spent.

I will try video next.

Regards

James

I had a similar problem with a site I built for a client. They had implemented a shopping cart that produced dismal results.

Thing is, after clicking "Buy Now" visitors would get redirected. So I created an 'intermediate' redirect page that showed one logo pointing to another with a 5 second delay.

Sales immediately boosted. I' talking 500% boost. I've also seen Chris Rempel doing this with all his newsletter redirects. It keeps the visitor engaged in the process of redirection.

In your case, it's using graphics to convey a very important "next step".

Never underestimate the power of graphics.

Client presents a product page with a "buy now" link. When clicked, they're redirected to a vitamin supplier to complete the checkout.

Apparently that was freaking out the customers.

So I built a "middle" redirect.cfm (I'm a coldfusion guy first and foremost) page that displayed a big graphic (one logo pointing to another) and told the visitor they'll be redirected.

        The Flow:
        1. My client's sell page with Buy Now links.
        2. My client's redirect page (one logo pointing to another)
        3. The vitamins sellers cart.

Back then, sales boosted from 1-3 per week to 14-30 healthy sales per week.

I suspect the middle page established "trust" of some kind. Or maybe the graphic helped. Who knows. Too many variables changed at once.

Sorry for hijacking this one, James.

Yep, I use graphics in my step-by-step backlink packets. I am not a video expert, but I do screenshots with red arrows pointing and things circled in red. Graphics work.

Nice tip, James. I think it's fair to say it's a good idea to tell people what to do, just like a call-to-action. If you don't ask them to buy, then won't buy.

Yup this is powerful. A short video actually explaining what needs to be done in like 10 seconds with the same picture also works quite well.

I do something similar. Although instead of the picture, I just tell them to watch out for the mail (give them the subject line to expect). I also ask them to whitelist our email address.

We do get lots of confirmed opt-ins the way we do it, but Im eager to try your method out.

    Thanks for sharing.

I added a video on how to click the "confirm link" along with whitelisting instructions a little lower on the page for one of my sites.

I've seen a nice increase in confirmations thanks to that. This is a great tip, thanks for sharing it Barry.

Great idea. I've seen many people do this and in some detail, such as a step by step course to opening your email (in all email accounts), finding the email, opening it, reading it and clicking the link in it. (with pics and vids).

Bottom line, communicate with your customer like a 7 year old (at least, until you get them on your list).

I actually tested a video, and a simple picture of the email with an arrow pointing at the link outperformed it.

Since I changed it, I've had 69 out of 72 confirmations.

    Hey James.

Ive done this on several of my thank you pages after the opt-in and it always worked well. Another thing you might want to add is a little COUNTDOWN TIMER to it to get them to confirm as quickly as possible. It increased my confirmed opt-in by 35%

Thanks James, I'm going to try this next time a quick visual usually does the trick with most people because they know what to expect. It's the "unknown" factor that causes confusion with a lot of people.

But you probably run into other problems then (being reported as Spammer etc)
Double op-in is the way to go when you really want to profit from your list.

LOL I have a simple rule. If both sides are 50/50 arguing it out vehemently, it usually means there are some serious advantages to be gained by using both tactics. So I just use both.

In fact, for this case of single opt-in vs double opt-in which could probably fill a decade's worth of Wall Street issues, I do both for different traffic sources. I create different pages with different autoresponders. Double opt-in is ideal, but not realistic (or profitable) for certain traffic sources.

        Eureka!

          Fabian,
could you elaborate please where doble opt-in is not realistic?
I know that it can lower the conversion but with those that converted you can build a tighter relationship (in my experience).

There is nothing about single-optin that prevents one from building a tight relationship. It's the same people reading your emails....the ones who want to read them.

I manage to increase my unconfirmed optin by allowing visitors to re-enter their email address.

    Here's how it goes:

    1) Mr.A opt-in.
    2) He then see a page that ask him to check his email to confirm his opt-in. On that page, there is a field that ask him to re-enter his email or another email if he doesn't receive the confirmation email.

In the past, I've got people emailing me saying that they never receive confirmation email. Ever since I implement this, I get also ZERO support email for such an issue.
