Someone On My Subscriber List Emailed Me Asking About Accepting Money Orders...What do I do?

I got an email Saturday morning from a client on my subscriber list asking if I accepted money orders, and if I did, where he could mail his to because he wanted to purchase the product I'm promoting (an affiliate product). I emailed him back, assuming that he may not have visited the sales page, and asked him if he had a credit or debit card, or a Paypal account, and told him where he can purchase the product.

He then emails me and tells me that he doesn't have a credit card and his paypal site makes him pay a $30 transfer fee from his bank account.

How do I deal with this?

I thought of having him send the money order to me, and then I'll pay for it with my own debit card and have the product emailed to his email address, but the problem with that is I still haven't filled my quota yet with CB to get paid, so I don't want Clickbank to think I'm scamming them.

Thanks for your help.

    You have 2 choices.

    1. You tell him you can't accept money orders.

    2. You accept it and do what you planned on doing.

If it were me, it's not worth the hassle. I'd simply say, sorry, I don't accept
    money orders.

Ultimately, YOU have to do what's right for YOU.

You could always email this particular client and inform him you will have to deposit the money order at your bank first to ensure it clears. Then when the money order is accepted by your bank you can send him the product. If the client really wants your product he will pay the PayPal transfer fee or wait until you cash the money order. Just my 2 cents, if he is legit he will be willing to work with you to get the product.

Or you could do the fellow a favor, and point out to him that he can buy a prepaid debit card and pay bills or pay for purchases with it. If you do issue this advice, you should also advise him to look for a prepaid card with the lowest fees (such as the Mango Money Prepaid Card).

Prepaid debit cards are available all over the place (even at Wal-Mart), but the fees can be substantial for some of them. Still, if a person doesn't want or can't have a checking account, it can be a viable option.

I'm wondering what country your client is in? Regarding the money order... If you're an affiliate you're not processing the transcaction so method of payment (to you) is a moot point.

Kevin, next time I'm going to take your advice. He's in Canada. I already made the mistake of giving him the address of where to mail the bank check. I've learned in business that it is never good to be desperate over making a buck, when there's an abundance of money everywhere. Lesson learned, I won't make the same mistake again.

          Thanks.

I wouldn't do it. Depending on what country your potential client resides, it could possibly be fraud. I have had a couple of fake money orders sent to me. I don't know how much this transaction is worth but I think it represents a huge hassle for little return.

To remain customer friendly, I would offer the client a free report find a free "ebook that you can give them. Offer them the advice given above regarding the debit card and see what happens.

Here's what I have done with my own CB products under the same circumstances.

I simply remind the person of the available accepted payment methods. Then share with them possible ways in which they could use the methods based on their current situation. (Like the pre-paid card.)

Some people really won't be able to use any of the payment methods. And you'll just have to let them know there is nothing you can do about that.

ditto kevin! you're not processing it so its not up to you to decide. but either way i'd say NO money orders...I dont even do it for my own products. not worth the time and hassle. if they really want it, they can start a paypal account for free.

Kevin, I'd be wary of accepting any kind of check or money order from a different country. It'll take ages to clear, and you don't know for sure if it will. If it doesn't for some reason or another, you'll get hit with a bounced check/money order fee at your local bank. It's just not worth the hassle for a small purchase at Clickbank. Your commission from that one purchase would not really be a lot, and it would be doing a lot of work for free IF he decides to request a refund during the 60-day refund period!

Be especially careful if the money order is for more than the cost of the product, and the "purchaser" asks you to wire the difference back to them. That is ALWAYS a scam.

i would not be surprised one bit if the money order arrives and he has over paid you. my guess is that the guy isn't really in canada either.

Well, on my subscriber form in my autoresponder, his IP address reads as from Canada, so that's correct. However, I'm going to take everyone's advice, treat this as a lesson learned, and email the dude and tell him not to bother, and give him the other options that are available to him.

        Thanks all for your input!

Well, after many of you started scaring me with all the possible scam scenarios, I sent him an email which went as thus:

          Mike:

I was just emailing you to let you know that if you haven't sent your money order yet, don't bother.
I will no longer be accepting money orders. There are other options that you can use to pay for a
product online if you really want it. There are pre-paid debit cards that you can buy to make
purchases online if you don't have a debit card. I'm sure you also know people who you can
directly give money to who will make the purchase for you.

Me accepting a money order is too much of a hassle, and I am in no way calling you a scammer, but
people emailing me something like this makes me think of one.

If you have already sent your money order, I will return it to you.

Thanks once again for your interest,

          Ike Love
His response to my email went as so:
first of all when you commit to something and say your going to do it, and then back down and change your mind. that two faced.

i wouldn't look up to you in a business deal if you did that to me.

i didn't send it because of this and i thought the way you handle things is a bit sketchy.

if i did send the money order it would clear. something is not right on your end.

don't keep to your word is a bad thing.

          have a great life.
I responded that I was sorry he felt that way and wished him the best. Lesson learned. I will be unsubscribing this guy from my list and moving on with my life.

          Thanks for all the input.

Wow, someone bent out of shape over a money order?

He's from canada and paypal charges 30 bucks?

He can't pay via credit or debit card at clickbank?

Sounds like to me something very fishy. And if it's legit, then the dude has money problems, I'll tell you that right now.

Good choice. Unsubscribe and be done with him the one sale isn't worth the effort of everything going bad.

            Rob

This is a very valid concern. You won't get your CB commissions if they think you are playing games with them.

Ask him if he has a friend that could help him out, since you will be unable to do so. Or suggest a pre-paid debit card from Wal-Mart.

I have never had a customer want to pay with a
money order. But I would only take one after it
was sent to me and I had cashed it.

I would email back the ustomer, explain this and if
he still wanted to buy, I'm in.

People who are into the whole metaphysics of money thing
would probably tell you to find a way to accept the money.

The idea is that if you say no to people giving you money,
then you're sabotaging your own goal.

Yeah I would definitely tell him to get lost too. I had a similar request before, but didn't allow the payment and told him to find an alternate way to pay. I never heard back from him after that...

make sure you check with your bank. many banks now limit the number/amount of money orders that you can deposit. I was once with a bank that would only take $250 worth of money orders for the entire life of the account - it's too easy to launder money with money orders.

Ditto to Istvan. Paypal does NOT have anywhere in their fee schedule a $30 fee, even from country to country. I have clients in Australia, British Columbia, Great Britain, and Thailand, and not one of them pays a fee like that.

Kevin nailed it -- since it's not your product, it's not for your to decide.

In the future if this sort of situation arises, you can tell the person that it's not your decision. Then write an email to the vendor (with the buyer CC'ed) explaining the situation. That way it's all on the up and up and the vendor decides if s/he wants to process the payment.

As a side note: If you don't trust the vendor to give you the commission on this sort of non-tracked payment, then you probably shouldn't be promoting that product/vendor anyway.

    Cheers,
    Becky
