Please Help - Autoresponders and existing customers

I would appreciate some advice/insight from a few of you, if you wouldn't mind.
I have a couple of clients that are interested in moving their customer database into aweber. My concern is that when I do that, the auto-confirm message will end up having people drop off the list.
Any experience with how this goes over? I do not want to lose any customers because they do not sign up - but aweber requires that the message be sent.
