been charged by Namecheap

Hi, namecheap have taken $39.95 from a credit card of mine without telling me, this was for hosting and domain. Should I have cancelled my account and can they do this to me, when I don't use the website no more. Please help. I have made a ticket to the support service but no answer as yet. Is this common?

thanks

Edd

If automatic renewal was ON - yes, they can do it. Because you agreed to pay automatically (by your registered credit card) when the renewal date comes up.

If you don't want automatic renewal - turn it OFF in your account.

EDIT: usually, all the registrars and hosting companies send you emails reminding you about the upcoming renewal dates...

    Should you have to cancel?

Of course - if you had an account that was on auto-renew (which is common). How would they know you've "abandoned" the site/domain if you don't cancel a standing order?

Your website, hosting and domain are YOUR responsibility
and it's up to your to pay for the relevant services under
the terms and conditions of each contract.

If you didn't want to continue with the hosting then it's
YOUR responsibility to inform the hosting company of that
fact - and in plenty of time too.

Don't go crying about Namecheap "'doing this to you" - you
      have done it to yourself.

If you're looking for someone to blame then take a good
look at yourself in the mirror.

Watch word from now on = Pay attention.

      Dedicated to your success,

That was an expensive lesson to learn. If you are going to sign up for a renewal, mark the renewal date on your calendar... or at least a week before the renewal will take place. That way you can review it and decide to cancel your subscription or not... before it is charged again.

It's been said ... you had autorenewal ON and you most likely ignored renewal notices that were sent to you.

yes your all correct. To be honest namecheap cant provide me with a refund but my website has gone and it should have a sales page. I asked them to give me another year instead...never mind thanks all of you for the advice. This is one lesson I learnt the hard way...whoops.
