New Domain Name Hyphen?

Hi,

A bit of a newb question but does anyone know if registering a combination of hyphen and non hyphen in a three word domain will affect how it will rank?

For example if

threeworddomain.com or three-word-domain.com are not available would it be wise to use threeword-domain.com?

Thanks

By itself, it doesn't matter one way or the other. What matters is the number and strength of your links. However, there are some factors to consider.

    1. Is the non-hyphen version a live and active site that's been around a while? If so, it may be difficult to beat. If it's just a non-indexed parked page with no links, then you'll be in good shape.

    2. It's harder to brand a domain with a hyphen in it, at least most of the time. If this is for brand building, you may want to consider other alternatives.

    3. Type-in traffic will be less and your repeat direct traffic could be impacted as well.

    4. Resell value of the domain will be less due to the myth building surrounding hyphenated domain names.
