Busy Electrical Engineering college student looking for a couple extra dollars per week.

Hello Warriors.

I'm currently going into my third year of college for Electrical Engineering. This year got extremely homework heavy, and coupled with my parents having tough financial times themselves, they can't really help me out with money (I go away to school) like they were able to the past 2 years.

My extremely busy and awkward class and studying schedules make it damn near impossible to balance a normal job outside of school, so I can't see myself using the conventional way I've tried to make money.

Basically what it comes down to is I am on the computer all day. I know a truckload about the internet, computers, networks, etc, and I want to try using the internet again to make money. However, when I say "make money" I'm not trying to quit a career to make 40k a year or some of these other numbers that are advertised on the WSO section.

All I'm looking for is some ideas from people that might know some type of internet marketing or way to use the internet for a college student to make just a few extra bucks. $50-$60 a week would help my parents out a ton by not having to go into their already empty pockets to help me with food costs, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I have the drive and determination to make thousands, however as an absolute amateur in the IM world, I am more worried about getting an initial income first with little to no initial investment, and working my way up from there. I am dead broke at the moment, and cant afford to do things such as outsource.

On that note, I can do stuff to start my business, however I have bought some SEO stuff in the past that just ate up too much time out of my day, for basically pennies. I really can't spend 5+ hours a day to make just a couple bucks a week when my school work is much more important. My time is much more valuable than that. After all, I am persuing a career in Engineering, not marketing.

If any college students are on here that are willing to give me suggestions, they would be very appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

You'll probably get this advice a lot, and I personally think that given your situation it is the best thing you can do...

      Provide a service.

This is something you can do from right here in the Warrior Forum. It will cost you $20 to post a thread, but if done correctly, making that extra $50 - $60 a week is very possible.

Basically, rather than you outsourcing your work, people will outsource their work to you.

There are dozens of different things you can do...writing articles being the most common and often times most recommended. Spend time reviewing the Warriors For Hire section of the forum for even more ideas.

Hope this helps, and best of luck to you.

        Thanks for the quick responses!

I definitely have thought about doing the dirty work for people, but it would only be a couple hours a week. The biggest problem I think is that I have a ton of competition. Although I'm a pretty good writer, that's about all I have to bring to the table. I know how to make websites, but when I made one for my cousin, it took hours and hours to put up.

Is there any suggestions in starting to be a VA or something to that degree? I suppose that having basic know how around the internet is pretty good to start somewhere.

As an engineering student, you must be technically competent. I also assume you have some interests in some niche market that involves engineering.

What if you were to offer your services (a few hours a week) to a company, or senior executive as an educated "research assistant" ... gather relevant news for his / her industry and present it to him in a concise matter.

Think outside the box a bit. Maybe approach Wall Street people who have read The Four Hour Work Week and want to offload some of their research to highly educated smart people. Maybe the VP of Business Development of a smaller corporation who usually does this work himself but finds his time more valuable spent elsewhere.

Gathering info can be of immense value. As an eng student you should be able to add that value to someone.

On a semi-unrelated note, I would just like to recommend everyone read the book mentioned above.

If the OP himself has not yet read this great resource, it may help give you some ideas.

It truly is a GREAT read. I would almost call it essential.

            Just my two cents.

As another option, since you understand engineering, head on to liveperson.com - I had worked with many Engineering and more basic students on this site - they do pay what they promise though it has become somewhat competitve nowadays (didn't work with them for quite some time now).

One thing I HAVE noticed is no one seems to say that any of the WSO's are worth following. Maybe SEO isn't for me, but is there any other content in the WSO section that would cater more to my situation?

I'd avoid the WSO section. In fact, I do. It's better to spend only what you've made online on new techniques. This means you have to do more research, sure, but you'll never endanger your finances.

Hmm. You're good at engineering and networking, right? Technical writing seems to be calling out. You can write more technical things that generalized writers like me simply can't. Work that angle relentlessly.

Constant Content is the only decently-paying "content site" I work with at the moment.

But the best route, in my opinion, is to set up a portfolio (this can be on a free Blogger blog until you actually earn money to pay for your own domain and hosting), then look at Freelance Writing Gigs and other free (not the ones that charge you) freelance job ad compilation sites for Craiglist ads, etc. Include your portfolio site in your responses to the writing ads.

Also, advertise in your sig here, and when you start making money, start a Warrior for Hire thread.

That should help get you started.

            dougp, above, stole my thunder...

Even back in the mid-80's, I made $10/hr/student running small tutoring groups. Four or five students each kicked in $10, and they got me for an hour or so. I spent the time answering questions and working example problems, explaining my thought process as I went.

The group sessions were more popular than the private sessions, because group members usually ended up with answers to questions they didn't even know they had until someone else asked.

One or two of those per week, and you have your food money...

You could start a resell rights business and start selling products via mini niche sites. Since you don't have the money to advertise, you can do article marketing and provide helpful advice on forums - like we do here.

Digital products may be up your alley if you don't have the time to fulfill physical products. You just have to get started doing something, since lack of movement doesn't make income. It isn't easy, but if you keep at it for a while you can have success.

If you're an electrical engineer then you're a smart man many with many skills. I wouldn't worry about making money on the internet because if you don't have the time, then its not a good idea to jump in. I would recommend setting up advertisements for general subjects such as math and physics. There are tons of undergraduates that struggle and fail these classes yearly. If you know you stuff, you can easily charge $10-$15 an hour, and you can tutor the students in your university library which is free. Just advertise on the parts of campus that students typically have these classes, you should be able to make $100 weekly easily all for free. Cheers.

I have to agree with this. I do have a nice degree and have spent quite a lot of time earning online. (Nothing to do with the sig sites. Anything good does not get shown here.)

So far I have one small success that makes money while I sleep, but it is offline. (rentals) Technically I do get sales while I sleep online, but at about 2 cents an hour for the time I put in while I am wide awake. (sigh)

So I would be super cautious about trying to earn online with 2 hours a week. Don't count on it, but of course it could happen.

What did work well for me at university was working weekends as a security guard. The busiest job I had took a 15 minute round once an hour. Nice exercise, and in between I had 45 minutes to get paid for what I would have been doing anyway, for free, studying. That worked out extremely well.

It might take just a bit of time. You could wind up in a position where you are busy, but if you do it well and get to know the company, you can ask for one of the places that lets you study.

At least in Canada, guess employment is tighter in your area.

Okay, I may be bucking the trend here. I just finished my B.App.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering. It's not as difficult or time consuming as you're making it. What you need to do is organize yourself first. Knowing engineering students (I'm working on my M.App.Sc. now), your time management is probably not the best. I bet you can find more than 2 hours in a week. Actually, you can probably find 2 hours a day. You just need to make hard choices.

If you want little to no investment, start with a .info domain and one month of web hosting (about a $12 investment total). Have your mini site and marketing plan ready to go before hand. Use a free autoresponder service. There are tons out there. You can migrate your list later if need be. It's not that hard.

Choose an affiliate product to promote, please not in the MMO niche. Clickbank is the typical starting point, and a good one.

You'll need to learn how to write though if you can't already. I know how engineers write.

Write a quick 5 page report (2500 words, think of it as 5 articles) in the niche and use the free eBook Cover Creator (Google it) and Paint.Net (free graphics editing program) to create a cover and image for your squeeze page. Write a 10 week autoresponder series, basically write 10 informative articles on your niche. In each message, add an affiliate link to your product.

Now, traffic. USE FACEBOOK. Create a group or fan page and start inviting people in similar groups to it. Post a link to your lead capture page on your group or fan page and write some status updates that give INFORMATION on your niche. Do NOT make every status update an ad.

If your group is informative, you'll reach a critical mass and your subscribers and group members will invite others, it will self promote and you'll make a reasonable online income.

Now go do it! If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM.

  • Use the concepts and principles that you learn in your electrical engineering classes, and compile the most important principles and theories into your own book or report.

Maybe something like Electrical engineering made easy for college students.

Then sell the book or report to other students. Market it online or such.

That way you can learn and make money at the same time. Know what I mean?

You aren't taking any of your study time away this way. You are using what you learned from studying to earn money. In other words, you are providing others the value which you have gained.

Just use the notes you normally take during classes or study time as the basis for your book.

I would suggest looking into a pay per click affiliate business. SEO takes a lot of time, you might have left college before you get any results.

If you can create a site that explains something complicated to the consumer, and in doing so helps that consumer to make a buying decision you can make a profit above the cost of buying the traffic.

Once you have found a suitable product niche you can do some research and get your head around the product you are advertising, then you can explain what you have learned and help others to buy.

There is a lot of planning to this, but it is probably one of the fastest methods to set up and it can work brilliantly.

I have a full post explaining how this can work on my blog, might be worth a read. I can't actually post the link as I'm new here. But it's in the passive income section. (See my signature)

So you only have 2 hrs a week and you want to make some money online... I wonder if I could make any money working 2 hrs a week. I mean, making money online require total dedication and complete commitment on your part to make it work. Even if you do any kind of writing for someone, how many articles can you write in 2 hours a week?

I don't want to disappoint you but there really isn't anything you can do to make extra hundreds working only 2 hours a week. Not that I know of. Anyone?

  • Go with writing for now until you have the time to get into something that requires a little more effort and momentum to get going. If you produce high-quality articles and position yourself well, you can charge $20 for a 500 word article fairly quickly. I can personally whip out about 5 of these in an hour and a half. Buy some voice to text software and you can possibly get even faster.

So if you just lined up enough clients that you were producing 10 of those a week (possilby just one client), that's a light work schedule with an additional $200 a week. That's $800 a month, not including elance and paypal fees. You'll have to spend a couple hours each week doing some marketing and communicating with clients, but in my opinion, that's not too shabby at all.

If you want advice on getting started, feel free to drop me a pm.

    Cheers,
    James

In my mid 30’s while I was working 50 hours a week as a controller of a company I went back to school and got a Master’s Degree in Accounting as well as studying for and passing the CPA exam.

Therefore, I have no sympathy for you at all. I worked 50 hours week, went to school 10 hours a week and studied 30 hours a week.

Damm, don’t be so lazy and stop making excuses why you can’t do something and come up with reasons why you can. If you need quick money, get a job delivering pizza’s or being a waiter someplace, you will make it much quicker than you will starting something online.

If you need fast money online, start bidding on writing jobs. That takes a long time to get good accounts though and that is if you deliver consistent high quality work.

You sound like I did when I was in college and so many of my friends, you think you start at the top, you don’t, you start at the bottom. Then you take a lot of crap for a long time and if you are real lucky somehow you make it to the top.

You have to learn how to survive first, then thrive latter. So, the moral of the story is to get off you as s and make something happen for yourself, because nobody else is.

xwg, i know some people have good interests and you've asked people to PM but watch your PMs very closely. Generally whenever someone new asks for advice, they usually get PMs from people trying to make a sale or two off their affiliate link and sometimes the product they're trying to promote may or may not be worth it.

just be on the lookout. It happened to me so I'm sure it'll happen to you.

I would like to make an addendum to this post, a couple of people are going off course of what I'm looking for.

First off, anyone that does not understand the difficulty of pursuing an engineering degree, let alone an electrical engineering degree, should take the time to analyze the amount of work and the shear difficulty of the work that needs to be completed. For someone that isn't a natural born genius (which actually tends to happen a lot in this major) it takes every possible minute of your free time to even have the chance of receiving an A in any of the required classes. What I'm getting at is that finding any way to make money without severely limiting your studying time in this major is pretty much impossible unless you happen to be a very gifted student.

During the summer I work 60+ hours a week as a waiter. I know HOW to work, I know how to work hard. My father owns a construction and carpentry business which I have been working for since I was old enough to swing a hammer. Laziness is by no means the issue here, I have the work ethic, I simply do not have the opportunity.

The point I'm trying to make with why I want to see how I could make money on the internet is that my class schedules are inconsistent throughout the entire work week. I've tried finding a job close to my area, and for one, most businesses don't even bother hiring full-time students because they know how their schedule changes every 3 months, and they are very undependable when it comes to having a set work schedule. If everyone here is business savy, they know that they would not employ someone who you can only guarantee hours for 3 months for. Businesses are looking for long term employees, always.

I spend a lot of time on the computer in the first place. Doing hw, etc. I am extremely internet and computer savy, I am trying to capitalize on this opportunity by getting into some sort of IM business. I can put in the required work in my own time.

And also, I never once said that I only have 2 hours a week to make money. It doesn't say that in my post. And quite honestly I'd have to be pretty idiotic to think I could pull that off. I can make the time to put in, whether it be limiting my sleep or spending less time on cooking meals. I can do it. I just need to take strain off of my parents by them having to worry about me being able to support myself.

    Hi...

Though you are an engineer student, opting for website designing will be the best option to start earning income. Once you get habituated and be expert in web designing you can start offering services to build sites for others. As of now, to design a single website people normally charge $50-$60.

You can also lookout for some cheap and reliable hosting service to gain profit out of your Job.

    go for iPage, wordpress, etc.

Hope this works wonders for you.
    Best of luck!!!
