One keyword or several?

I was working two keywords for a site and I got on page one for both. I want to put those keywords in a maintenance phase and continue to backlink but not focus on them and start work on two new keywords to bring even more traffic to this site. Is that what most of you are doing? Continuing to bring the rankings up with new keywords or once you have a good one you move on to the next site?

Thanks

I generally study my existing content and look what I am getting traffic for and then expand on that, so I am working on many keywords at any given time.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

That's entirely up to you really.

If you want to continue to build your current site even bigger, than naturally you would now want to focus on additional keywords of interest.

However if your intention is to make other sites regardless, then now might be a good time to start work on a new one.

For me though, I have one site that I consider my primary money maker. I focus on unique keywords all the time, and I'm constantly adding new ones.

Kudos on achieving rankings though. Keep up the good work.

This just goes to show you how important keyword research really is.

      Best of luck,
      Derek

This is what I do as well. When doing niche research I attempt to get an exact match domain hopefully for something with decent volume.

I pick at least 4 other longtails to target with the site along with a best keyword to rank for. This is going to be something that is a little broader with much higher search volume and reasonably beatable competition.

Start with the lowest competition keyword or keywords first, building links and optimizing landing pages, and after I start to see rankings happening for those move to the other keywords.

As the site begins to rank for the lower competition stuff, it's getting links and building authority. If your niche is broad enough, you can continue to expand on to additional keywords eventually building up a pretty good authority site with many multiples of the traffic you'd get only targeting a couple of keywords.

It is a never ending battle, you research then you develop, then you plan and do it all over again, You never really know what you can expect, but the more you try the more you learn and the more you learn the easier it becomes to dominate for the keywords you want to target.
