I would really appreciate your advice regarding domain names.

Lets say I was going to do a web site about "Fruit cakes" and "fruit cakes" were in a big market, with quite a few good keywords, and I was planning on building the site for the long term profit

What would you say is the better way to go?

buying fruitcakesreviews.com for about $1200?

getting fruitcakesreview.biz

getting fruit-cakes-reviews.com

or buying a pr4 aged domain and redirecting it to my site, the way Terry Kyle recommends?

I know all the other stuff I will need to do but I'm stuck in my mind about the domain name.

Thanks

To me being both a domain invester and wanna be IM I also go for the main keyword domain and if I had the funds would go for the direct name fruitcakes.com even with out SEO you will get type in traffic from high power generic keyword and sometimes that alone can be a winner because type in traffic is LOOKING for you for a reason.

The straightforward domain name that is well, straight to the point is best. Also supposing you wanted to dominate in a particular area say Alaska for example, then you could also buy fruitcakesalaska.com in order to pop up under that search and forward that to your main domain.

I have always been advised against using domain names with dashes in them. Getting fruitcakesreview.biz is a decent option, and is probably the one I would go with. Although it all depends on how much you think this domain will be worth to you in the long run. If it is worth it to spend money on an already established domain name, or buying a pr4 aged domain, then that might be your best option.

Being fruit cake reviews averages 110 searches a month bad investment of 1200.00. holidayfruitcake.net has a 170 searches a month and is available on godaddy for 6.99. The rest of the 1200.00 would make a killer site, content, and seo driving it to #1 and have money left over.

I was using fruit cakes to mask my real keyword, which is in a $10 billion industry. I never even touched a fruit cake

One concern that I have is that if I buy the old domain name it might bring bad luggage with it and I don't know how to check that out

Internet Archive: Digital Library of Free Books, Movies, Music & Wayback Machine and you can check history on domains.

I went to the Way Back Machine and even though the domain I am thinking about buying was formed 6 years ago the only thing that popped up was a robots.txt file

This. Unless you don't want to build a business on a domain-name of which the unhyphenated .com version already belongs to someone else, because of the inevitable potential for some future loss of traffic to them.

For your own SEO purposes, the hyphens will make absolutely no difference at all, in my opinion.

It's certainly a huge advantage to begin with the exact keyword domain but if it costs that much to invest in a domain, I would go for the keyword with a dash in it (.com). From a SEO point of view, as long as your keyword is in the domain (at the front) with proper backlink building, you're in good hands.

I agree - except - if you can, tie up all three, so you can have a lock on the domain. I have a new niche I'm tackling, and the .com was not available, but I got .net, .info, .biz, and .org. Because of the nature of my niche, I will actually get use out of all of them. And, because the .com version is expiring this year and the owner is not using it (at least not directly tied to the niche which the domain would imply), I will probably be able to pick up the .com in January. It's a technique that's worked for me in the past.

Another thought - following the fruitcake theme, (or whatever your real domain is), you can, in many instances, use a variation, such as amazingfruitcakes.com (available) or fruitcakedelights.com (also available), and sometimes your variation can be an improvement. Just use that principle in working with your "secret" keyword.

any of the domains would work. as long as you have your main keyword in the url, title, h1 and content and great backlinks with the anchor as the keyword to follow

It makes absolutely no odds how your domain ends - .com or .bizarre

I was taught that .com is a more commercial viable domain especially if you want to sell the site later. I prefer it because a lot of people who know your site name normally will automatically type in .com

    1. do keyword research eg. 1000+ exact searches per month

    2. Competition - easy vs competitive

    3. if competitive get a jump and pick up the .com

    4. other tld not as valuable... but need to weigh the benefits vs cost. .biz and .info are awful. .net and .org ok depending on target market. hyphens are bad for word of mouth branding or return customers.

go for the exact keyword domain, I did an experiment last week with an exact keyword domain that used hyphens and shot to the 1st page in less than 2 weeks with little to no link building for a keyword that gets 22,000 exact monthly searches. I'm sold
