Too funny! I mean, at least make an effort...

I had a few domain names that I've been meaning to get going Real Soon Now... so I decided to get going on them a few days ago.

Well, I only got as far as the Wordpress installation.

Today I see about a dozen comments awaiting moderation... on the default "Hello World! post:

"Hello, Thanks for these types of useful informations, I find your website a refreshing change, and I plan to visit again! I've just started a similar project at <link>..."

I mean, really - and on the "Hello World! post of an empty, default installation?

Wow...

I checked one of my "dormant" test sites today and it had more than 40 comments awaiting moderation. On there is no real content. Just testing themes with Hello world.

    Yes, too funny

I get about 40 a day on two blogs. It makes it so hard because I know I need the comments for google rank but I just cant spend 30 minutes a day on it.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.

Cathy, just send me your URL and I'll be happy to make pithy comments on how much I enjoy your 'Hello World' post.

Yes, yes, yes Dogscout. You gave me that brilliant idea in a previous post and now I do it like dambusters. I remove the spammy url, reword it so it doesn't say "I'd love to use some of the info on your dog site for my elephant acne site" and make it seem like a glowing testamonial. Hey presto, the spammers are suddenly my friends!!

Even the worst attempt at spam can be reworded and the link removed. Genius.

I've been doing something similar for about a year now. Since a lot of commenters post scammy sites on my big "work at home/home business" site, I take those type of links and take them to a "Don't Go There" page that explains why shows them better alternative. I only do that on the really high traffic pages and only if the comment link is really scammy.

I like your idea, too. :-)

Most of these comments are not comments left by real humans, but rather software that sends bulk comments.

That makes it even more insulting that no one/thing has left a comment on any of my dormant sites.

Please send me the links to those sites and I'll fill them with insightful comments like:

"Wow, your writing is awesome -- you must be a journalist!"

        And...

"Great post. I've added the RSS feed to my reader."

        (j/k)

Same goes for forums. I set up a forum but didn't yet have the graphics ready, so it wasn't live. Well, not technically. Apparently the SE bots found it, so the spammers found it too. Had plenty of profile spammers as well as regular spammers all before a real user ever laid eyes on it.

        Dang those footprints.

        Cheers,
        Becky

Why do all these spammers bother?

Surely they're not getting any benefit from all the crappy comments they try and get through akisment and the mods etc..

Throw enough crap at the wall and some will stick!

They spam en masse and hope to hit a percentage of auto approve blogs.

Ya I would say none of those comments are real... just one of the downfalls of wordpress... commenting and the ever lasting spam.

Comments via Software at its best, trying to build backlinks by using spam. Just a plain stupid technique commenting on blogs that haven't even started yet!

Makes you wonder - are these bots providing a "service" being promoted as "pay us to build backlinks for you" on forums???

I've gotten so sick of some of them that I just turned off comments on all my blogs. I don't think I once got a worthwhile comment worth reading or keeping. My biggest mistake was to not turn off the "Email me whenever someone posts a comment' check box - I used to get tons of moderation emails. What a pain, and such a time waster! Yep - it's all off now for me.

I had that issue with one of my sites (cause of the traffic leeching domain name) I just set it up but didn't have time to deal with it, the next thing I know there are 40 spam comments awaiting moderation (all from domains involving **** berries, forex and viagra)

I have no idea where all this came from, sicne I didn't advertise the site in any way, I just set it up and put it aside to deal with it later on. Must be the wordpress ping plugins or something. I have akismet and advanced captcha running on my main blog, which gets a lot of traffic, and I hardly ever receive spam comments there.
