How many keywords should I target...?

I have a website now and the guy that built it said he has inserted my keywords in to the site. I gave him a list of 50 keywords that were really built round a couple of main ones. Can anyone tell me how many keywords we should aim to insert in a website?

How can I best get my site ranked under these 'specific' keywords - is it writing articles etc under these same specific keywords or just loads of backlinks from any keywords?

    We use posts to target specific key phrases. We mainly target one per post and then we will also geo targeting. As for the general site we will do about 12 targeted phrases.

    This will show our client Tyrehouse no 3 or 4 out of 28,400,000 results in Australia. If you click on only pages from Australia it will go up a notch.

    You will hear lots of myths and soothsayers however the proof is in the search.

      Sorry, I am not completely sure I have the jist - you mention you use 'posts' to target specific key phrases, do you mean blog posts where you use the specific kw?

      Also what do you mean by geo targeting?

        It depends on if you are using short- or long-copy...

        I generally strive first for readability, then I try to replace generic words with keywords... I want to put as many keywords as I can on a page, without taking away from the reader experience and the smooth, easy flow of the sentences...

          thanks tpw,

          I have a long sales copy and the copywriter only put around 6 kw's in. The guy that put the website together has inserted about 50 into the website to better optimise it - I just selected these 50 kw's that were based around the main 6 kw's on the copy and hope I can still try and get ranked for these additional kw's now even those they are inserted into the website but not all in the actual copy...

          Appreciate if you or anyone else has any further comments
