Competitive Niche - Am I going about it the right way?

Hi WF - I started a site in a really competitive niche. Not competitive like "Golf' or 'Lose Weight' but competitive nonetheless.

Here are my traffic tactics:
-Article Marketing - I submit to a variety of directories, ping and rss the links to the articles. I also post the articles to my blog.

-I do web 2.0 - I have posterous set-up to auto-post to my facebook/twitter/linked-in etc..

-I'm trialing Build My Rank to see if higher PR backlinks will help

-I submit the occasional press-release

- PPC (Although in this niche, I find you get way more clicks than conversions)

Now - I have been working on all these tactics, but I'm not super far down the road but have recently made a sale.

I'm looking for advice from warriors before me in competitive niches - would you be doing additional marketing as well?
Any great tips for me?

Thanks!
Christine

refine your sales message to work on ppc... then you will get more sales on ppc and the other methods... focus on the user and what they want and need.

did your sale come from ppc or organic?

    The sale came from Organic.

Regarding my sales message.. this one is tricky (for me at least). It's a product site (see 'miracle fruit' in my sig). The front page isn't particularly configurable without a total site overhaul - so what I have done is update all the product descriptions and made sure all my other pages are informative and hopefully answer the questions purchasers may have.

If anyone has suggestions - I'm all ears.

I would prefer to test ideas that can work within my current site structure (because I'm hoping more traffic = more conversions)

    Thanks!

Sounds like you got a good Plan going. Maybe add some manual, constructive Blog commenting on do follow blogs.

Also, I wouldn't worry about a Niche being too competetive. That is all I go after because that is where the money is at. It just takes some time but is so worth it in the long run !!

Have you used Search engine optimization? Are you using good back links? Use as many free blog sites as possible. Did you do good keyword research? This is the basic requirement to get up in the rankings. Find keywords that have a lot of views but do not have as much competition.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I have done SEO on my site and done keyword research. I think it's probably pretty easy to guess what my main word is!

I think what I really need is just a dose of patience...

You are generally on the right track...

If you are getting more clicks than conversions, then you are inviting tire kickers to click your ads... That will break you financially in the PPC game...

To make PPC profitable, you need to pre-qualify your prospects with your copy...

Tell them the cost before they click your ad...

Or tell them a specific action is required, like Email Required, before asking for the click..

Pre-Qualify your prospects with PPC always!!!

Now that is something I had never thought of...

      So would something like:

      Ready for Miracle Fruit?
      10 tablets only $14.95
      Discount for bulk orders

Is that what you are getting at?

      Thanks for that advice!

Christine, most importantly, it needs time and testing. Try testing your content and write down what it works and what it does not, in other words what gives you the highest return. It will take time for the links to spread and get considerable traffic, but if you are patient and persistant, everything is possible.

Ok, I've updated my PPC ads - some time should tell if I can lost the tire kickers..

I have 20 articles on order and 10 blog posts and I will write a few press releases and the flood of traffic should arrive!

    Thanks all.

For competitive niches, just remember, you have to be in it for the long haul. These things don't happen over night.
