Hi Everyone,
The domain name I want is taken in the .COM version, but I can get it in a .US or a hyphenated .COM. I can't decide, but I am thinking of going with the .US.
Would a domain with a hyphen in it be a bad idea?
Thanks in advance for your advice!
#.us #hyphen

    If .com is taken try
    .net
    .org
Try to stay away from from hyphens or extra words in the URL. Keyword only, Google likes that.

.Net and .Org are available, but I was told to stay away from both of those extensions. Now I am confused.
      Would .US be ok?

.Com is the premium but the .net and .org should be okay.

So called Gurus can make it to number 1 spot on google with a .org extension so i dont see why you could rank well enough

Hyphenated domains are not a problem as they are becoming more and more prolific in the domain name area. You can however run into a ranking problem if your hyphenated domain name is an exact match domain name with no hyphens and the site is ranking well already.

If your going to use .US there is nothing wrong with it. .US communicates that your company is located in the US and that you pretty much are targeting US visitors.

.net or .org with exact keyword phrase will outrank .com with hyphens, excluding all of the other factors. (tested)

In my experience even .info is better than .us. If com is taken get net, org or info..

The .info was available, but I always think of .info as a spammy domain. I get tons of spam mail from .info email addresses.......

I get a ton of spam mail from .com addresses so I don't buy .com domains.:rolleyes:

Dorim, You get spam from all extensions.
Now days you can get high ranked regardless of .com or any other.
Try to use domains that people will type the way they think and
forget about Google. There's hundred of way to drive trafic to your
site without worrying about the big "G". Just try it.
I sell domains and works for me.

      Cool.

FWIW, the .us wouldn't be good for anyone that may *type* it in the URL line. In other words, if they hear a radio ad for your site, they will almost surely type yourreallycoolsitethatmakesalotofmoney.COM vs .US.

      If it's a link, that's not a big deal.

If it's SEO you're going for, I have .com, .net and .org's ranked. I haven't used a .us for seo sorry.

There is nothing wrong with a hyphenated .com

    http://seemywebsite.com

    http://see-my-website.com

    Many "gurus" use hyphenated domains.

Personally, I would not go with a .us domain, unless you are specifying a specific niche such as
    http://SpeedyTyperersAre.us

I hope to see your new domain up in the rankings above the original .com

There is no problem in taking a domain with hyphen. If you build strong back links for your website, you will better rank than your competitors

I have a couple of .coms with hyphens in them, but I always thought I made a mistake going with the hyphens. I get conflicting advice when I ask about it.

I don't feel any problem with hyphen domains. I have myself worked on a hyphen domain site. Make your website well optimized and build quality back links, you will never loose.

I would only use a .us if it was ONLY targeted towards US users, there is nothing at all wrong with .net and .org..... .com is just a LOT better lol... but I would take the .net over a hyphenated .com & as for .org...... .org is sometimes even better than .com for certain uses, such as charity sites, informational health sites etc..... but NOT recommended for commercial purposes.

.net is ranked higher on my domain than .com. Google uses about 100 other factors now, maybe more. I bought the .net because some no talent company already had my .com. Took me 3 weeks to reach the top of Google. Be persistant and constantly make updates to your website. Like comments, feeds, etc.

I do also like the hyphens though. I think more and more buyers are figuring it out though. hyphen = affiliate marketing.

There are only a couple of reasons to go with "dot com" - one of those is for the benefits of type in traffic.

However, if you are putting a hyphen in some words that normally don't use hyphens, do you think your visitors are going to add those hyphens naturally?

For your personal circumstance, I'd likely get the full keyword without the hyphens in any extension available. Nets are just as good btw. They are all good.
