What is the difference between using dot com, dot info, dot net and others as such?

What one of this is SEO friendly?

Thanks

.com means that the domain is for business or commercial purposes.

.info means that the domain is for sharing information.

.net means that the domain is for a technology based company.

But I think, people prefer .com because it's more user friendly, popular and easier to remember than other extensions.

People are more accustomed to .com domains.

I'd suggest you get a .com over the others if possible, even if you have to add one small word on the end.

Google and the others give the most weight to .com in their ranking algorithm. Followed by .org and .net. The others will take the backseat to those all things being equal.

From the search engines' points of view, they're all equally SEO-friendly/unfriendly, John: it just depends on your own SEO, and doesn't intrinsically matter whether it's .com/.info/.net.

There are many people who believe otherwise, just as there are many who believe all kinds of urban myths of internet marketing. Ultimately, it's all opinion, though. Some people like to dress theirs up as "factual", but nobody can really prove what they're saying, because Google doesn't want anyone to know, for understandable reasons.

For example, there's loads of evidence (and it's discussed in 100 threads here, with supporting evidence) that it's no more difficult to rank a .info domain at the top of Google than a .com domain. But it's only "evidence". It's never going to be "proof". And you won't stop people disputing it, if it conflicts with something they hold as a deep-seated belief with the usual emotional investment in "not being wrong about it".

If people believe that Google gives more weight to .com domains, they'll say so and make it sound "just like fact". But however forcefully and insistently they say it, it isn't fact - it's their personal opinion only, and countless experts disagree with it.

Dot coms are good for "type in traffic" and branding purposes.

As far as SEO goes, all will rank depending on how keyword rich they are and how well you build the main site and supporting links. The extension itself does not determine where the site will show in the SERP's.

I do agree with you Alexa and I must say you always have nice long well written and thought out responses, I must get some articles from you at some point.

As far as my experience goes with different domain extension I always look suitability and availability when getting a domain name. In my experience they are all equally SEO friendly.

Personally I do prefer .info's as this is only meaningful extension in my mind and it suits very well for informational website.

Whichever gets you the exact match keyword in the domain, take that.

Yes; this may be so, for some purposes.

For some of my purposes, I actually prefer .info sites, which seem more appropriate.

There's also the related issue that if you don't own the .com yourself, someone else can, and you can lose future traffic to them.

But these points are unrelated to the SEO issue, which - in my opinion - is clearly just an "urban myth".

No real difference other than price, but people naturally recognise a .com

For the record, I don't think Google has publicly stated if any of these are more friendly to SEO. I think the primary difference between the rankings is based on different SEO experiences of various users on the web and not that of Google specifically or any other search engine.

I don't know of any comprehensive case studies that would prove one is better than the other, so I can't say that one is. I have always had about the same luck with each one, more or less.

If anyone does have a solid case study about it, this would be the thread to post it in.
