Blogs... buy or create?

I am sick of the corporate world, tired of having to watch every step I make because of the constant RIF mentality of corporate America. Besides I work in a very unstable industry and a very competitive one when it comes to jobs.

For someone interested in monetizing a blog (not a business related blog) and having little to no IM experience would it be better to buy a premade blog for a nitch that interests me? Or create my own from scratch... My thinking is that between work and family commitments buying something that is already created with some content and just needs to be hosted and modified a little (and of course updated regularly) would be a huge head start as opposed to starting from nothing...

Thoughts?

There appears to be some disconnect in your core values here.

If you do not want to repackage someone else's work for a product, why are you asking whether you should do that for a blog?

If I were you I would create my own blog and inject your personality and style. You want to be original and stand out.

It depends on what niche you want to be in, and your skill/experience level, and how involved you want to be. I'm a little concerned that your reasons for wanting to own a blog is because you hate your job. That's not a good enough reason, because you have to realize success is not guaranteed and you may in fact not earn any money during your 1st year. Your job is important.

If you have tons of money to dump, there are blogs you can buy, and there are blogs you can pay someone to create for you, as in the design...etc. Taking over a popular, established blog may backfire if the audience prefers the original blogger to you, and start leaving.

If you don't have experience, it's best to start small, start new, learn the ropes, and slowly grow bigger. That is if you want to "brand" yourself. This is especially so in the "make money online" niche.

I don't really "hate my job" I'm just starting to hate the corporate lifestyle. Don't get me wrong, I'm not planning on quitting my job, at least not in the foreseeable future. I just want to start something on my own and try like H3ll to make a success out of it. If I cash in big time GREAT! If I only make a little bit of money each month then I can always analyze and change my tactics. My goal isn't to become rich or retire at 40, it's to lay the ground work for a possible career change (working for myself).

I really don't want to buy a blog that is already up and running as I considered what you pointed out about the audience liking the original blogger and not sticking around to see what my style would be. I was referring to some of the premade or custom made blogs offered elsewhere on WF. Something that's already put together that I can put up on the web, promote and build on...

Well, buying an existing one there are two kinds - Established or turn key. Make sure you know which one you are after.

Established = Already indexed, maybe ranking for some keywords, getting traffic, usually earning something (sometimes not) and price is often based on the claimed income (XX of monthly earnings etc). Buy at own risk.

Turnkey = Brand new, much cheaper than an existing one, and therefore less risk. If buying this one, try to get one that already is indexed in Google at least. Check if the domain is banned or not.

There is also one more, the fully custom one, which you can order from some warriors here, who provide the service. The important thing to note in all cases, is the domain name, because that is your foundation.. Best to get one with your niche keyword inside it.

Sorry, I was referring to launching an IM plan pertaining to selling someone elses work teaching how to make money online.

I guess I should have left that part out.

I know there is money to be made in that nitch, lots of it but I want to start with a non IM themed blog, health, auto, debt relief, something like that.

Edited to remove, guess I didn't reread my original post enough, thanks for pointing that out CDarklock, that could be why I didn't get any response from the first post.

Editing out the discrepancy instead of explaining it certainly isn't going to get you any closer to an answer from me. I don't have enough information about who you are and what you're trying to do. You keep removing information. This is not helping your cause.

You could buy a blog that someone else has already started and then take it over and add your own unique content to and and change it as you like. That way you will have a bit of a headstart.

There's two ways to go with this:

    1. Buy A PLR blog, kind of like a theme that already has posts in it for you. You can add your own stuff to it. You will need to get your own domain.

    2. Buy a one-off blog that someone has started and abandoned. This would come with the domain and content and if they have already started link building and it is a few months old that is a good head start. Then add your own content as you see fit. If you have the money, buy one that is already earning and you will have instant income!

The best place to find both of these is here:

    Complete Web Sites For Sale!

Of course you could start your own from scratch but if i was starting over today, I would buy one that was already "aged" and earning money to get ahead of the curve.

@CDarkLock: Sorry for the confusion , I only removed the text that was causing confusion as it really didn't have anything to do with my actual question.

@Dellco: I was leaning towards a turnkey blog, something to get a head start. I found several on an initial viewing of the "Complete Websites For Sale" section, as a matter of fact CashCow's collection was the first one that I looked at.

Not sure if I want to buy a limited run type turnkey blog or a custom made one. I know there will be a major difference in cost but I'm thinking that having a totally unique nitch blog might be better than having one of 35 or so with the same feel and nitch (if that makes any sense). I'm not afraid of competition or making the blog "mine" but I don't want readers to think that they are reading from a "cookie cutter" type of site.

@CashCow: I signed up for your Blog Profits email series, good info in there, thanks!

Check out flippa.com and see if there are any blogs that are actually making money and make sure they provide proof of making money and proof of traffic ... and make sure the traffic isn't paid traffic or junk traffic exchanges and if the price is within your range, you will save yourself a lot of work. Just make sure to do the due diligence on the site and buyer before buying.

What are you passionate about? What really interests you?
Either build from scratch or as Suzanne suggests, buy a working blog from flippa.
The key when starting out is to blog about or run an online business in a market you are passionate about.
It makes finding content easy and it holds your interest.
It can get tough trying to find sock knitting ideas if that's not your thing, but if it is, it's easy...
Start out small and allow yourself time to learn and make a few mistakes along the way.
