Consumer Watchdog PayPal Scare

ON the BBC News this morning "Which" the UK Consumer organisation, warned the public not to use PayPal because, outside of Ebay, there are not the guarantees that you have with a regular credit card.

I have everything set up with paypal. and with scare stories like this on the main morning news will not be good for busines, maybe its time to look elsewhere and offer my customers an alternative method of payment.

I have been with Paypal for years and never had a problem. It has many advantages over paying by credit card and an easy to use system. I don't leave money in my account there except as a small reserve to pay for goods I buy.

Don't listen to the scare mongers they probably work for the bank.

I think PayPal is great even if they charge a bit too much. I am not worried about Papal, but I am worried that my customers might not buy from me because they don't trust paypal

Sadly, the general public will listen to the scaremongers. All it takes is the slightest blip in consumer confidence and trust and things can really get tricky.

Something even as small as this can affect a lot of people in the UK. Let's hope that no-one was watching ;-).

I've used Paypal for several years on one of my websites and think they offer a great service.

Actually, the consumer seems well protected to me. If the customer complains about non-delivery I have to be able to prove that I shipped the goods, which is impossible to do on goods shipped by air freight, small packet, regular airmail or surface mail so I always have to refund the money, even though I have shipped the goods!!

Thankfully, it does not happen very often.

I agree with you. Paypal seems to have some pretty good customer protections in place. Their site is secure and user friendly. I've been usin Paypal for some time now and I think they are fine.

Don't you have some kind of traceable mail system? Here, it's called registered mail, what do they call it in your country?

I'd like to know the specifics of what they mean by "there are not the guarantees that you have with a regular credit card".

It is true that if you pay for something out of your PayPal balance or through an eCheck that you don't have as much protection as you would with a credit card. However, you can pay using a credit card with PayPal as the processor and you would have exactly the same protections as you would with any other processor.

You can use Paypal by paying with your credit card, so you would have the "protection" of the CC.
