there is no one method for competition analysis, it is part of the business strategy.

usually what you do is look at the first page of google and reverse engineer the websites there.

I´m using chrome SEO lately to have a fresh look (the same plugin is available for fireox), and get deeper in those that have chances to be outranked.

you also look for windows of opportunity: those are web 2.0 sites that let you sneak in first page.

Hard to be too specific here. In general, the sites which are hard to compete with tend to be well-established, have a ton of pages and authority and a ton of links to them. There are lots of tools and procedures, and you'll find a lot of references if you poke around this forum. Search for 'keyword analysis' and 'keyword competition'.

Actually, you aren't competing with sites. You're competing with pages. What makes some of the monster sites hard to compete with on individual pages is their linking. A mega-site like About.com not only has masses of links coming from other sites, but huge numbers of internal links.

One bit of good news, though. Many times you may not be able to outrank a page, but you may be able to get the clicks in spite of the order you appear in.

Say you're scanning the results of a search. Which listing are you more likely to click on first?

    keyword 1 | keyword 2 | keyword 1 + keyword 2

    "About" "Privacy" "Site Map" "Blog"

    OR

Keyword 1: Ten things you need to know now

Find the ten things you absolutely need to know about keyword 1, and how knowing these can help you [benefit]

If I'm interested in "keyword 1", I'm likely going to click on the second listing before the first regardless of where they are on the page.
