I use my own software, because it gives me other valuable stats, not just the word count.

A lot of people use Microsoft Word to write their articles: it does have a word count and a spell checker - two most important features.

If you use Open Office, you can find word count under File/Properties/Statistics.

If you use Word 2007 , "Word Count" is on the "Review" ribbon.

If you use an earlier version of Word, it's under file/properties/statistics

If you are using Firefox, there is an extension called Word Count Plus.

Just google, and install. Pretty simple, just right click and highlight any text you want, and then click an icon in the task bar and it gives it right to you.

No density info or anything though, just word counts.

I use this script. (It's free.) I pasted it into an html document and just open the document in my browser window, then paste my text into it.

However, now that I see DarenK's post I think I will just install the Firefox extension - sounds like a handy tool to have.

<form method="POST" name="wordcount">
<script language="JavaScript">

var formcontent=document.wordcount.wordcount2.value
formcontent=formcontent.split(" ")
document.wordcount.wordcount3.value=formcontent.le ngth
}
</script>
<table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">

<td width="100%"><textarea rows="12" name="wordcount2" cols="60" wrap="virtual"></textarea></td>
</tr>

You don't have to go to a ribbon in Word. It shows the count at the bottom of the screen in real time.

Free download - google dupefreepro.

I use this a LOT. It has a word count of course, but it also compares the original article with the rewritten article and tells you how close they are in content. Very handy.

The last couple anyway, I don't remember when they added it to the bar at the bottom. I *do* remember when I used to have to go up and hit the menu item. That sucked. "Am I there yet, am I there yet, am I there yet?"

Did you know Wordpress counts words? I just noticed this recently. It's next to the publish button.
