Mega Newb Aweber Question!!!

Lets get to the heart of it...

If I gain too many 'complaints' from broadcasts, will that make my mailings land in the spam box for future sendings to NEW subscribers?

In the past, I've gone above the 'recommended complaint ratio' and now I'm witnessing abnormally low open rates for my follow ups (not broadcasts)...

Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks!

Are you using single or double opt-ins?

I use a verizon.net email and it seems to work better then a yahoo or hotmail acct.

It is better to use double optin. Although the open rate could have just slowed because the readers are no longer interested in what you have to have to offer. You need to be providing the free useful information and only adding a link to about every 3 email. This will increase your open rates if you would have been using this to start with. Your subscribers probably put you on their spam blocks them selves which is why your open rate has decreased. You will also notice that in aweber you can see the rate at which they concider a message to be spam when using the broadcast feature.

Thank you Pete for your extremely valid point - My situation is a bit different from the one you're addressing though.

Im having issues with the open rate of 'new' subscribers.

The initial follow up has had a great open rate in the past, but over the last two days I've had 1,200 new subscribers and 13 opens on the first 'follow up'!!! Yikes!

Broadcasts still pull in clicks...but...the follow ups were my money makers

Be aware on the double opt-in...

I have been told that once you take your Aweber account to double opt-in, you must use it for all of your lists, and you can never return to single opt-in...

No, sorry but that's not true.

To try and simplify what I am trying to say, as an Aweber client, you have two levels. The top level - the account level and the lower - list level.

You can use double opt in (actually called confirmed opt in) or single optin. So at the list level, you might have five lists, they can can be a mix of single or confirmed (double) opt in.

If Aweber get too many complaints arising from your lists, especially the single opt in lists (where the problems mainly occur), then they will convert your options to confirmed (double) opt in at the account level.

Should they do this, then you are forever confined to the confirmed opt in option as you cannot change it at the list level.

Normally, Aweber will inform you if your account is causing problems, before they take any action.

            Jeff.

Then I think Aweber may be throttling your emails, try using double opt-ins, it always leads to a better list, and if you start getting spam complaints, Aweber tends to lean more towards you, with double opt-ins.

    Just my thoughts

    Thanks for the insight Mark!

If you dont mind, I have one more question...
Does the throttling issue apply to that particular list or my entire account??

I think it would be the account, but truthfully I don't know. You could send a support ticket or give them a call. There real cool, and could give you a much better answer.

Single opt-in is appealing due to the immediate gratification of having more opt-ins. The quality may be lower and you may experience more attrition. I always recommend my clients remove old non-responsive addresses. Put them in a last chance campaign. Basically give them the most engaging offers possible to reactivate them. If they don't response get them off your list. They are dead weight.

I also see some drop downs in the number of subscribers opening my emails
from time to time, this can happen due to several factors:

    1. above the 'recommended complaint ratio' - you have to avoid it, it is hard but doable
    2. If you send too many followups your subscribers will ignore you
    3. Boring title - you have to use an interesting, maybe teasing, titles
    4. Keep the contect in high quality - people are not stupid, they know when you are recommending products/services for the sake of selling them only
    5. Try sending some of your emails with links to free resources - useful sites, free ebooks etc. - gain trust!
    6. use double opt-in !

    Good luck Mate,
