To Flip Or Not To Flip? That Is The Question

Hi warriors,

I guess you're intrigued by the er... intriguing title of this thread. To flip or not to flip- I'm referring to site or blog flipping on Flippa.com.

I started a Wordpress blog end of last year. It had an exact match domain name. I made a few posts and added some backlinks through articles. Nothing major- it's just a small simple blog.

Within a short time, I got my site ranking on the first page of Google and I was making a bit of money through Adsense. I also had some Amazon links but didn't get any sales that way.

Then out of the blue, I bought this site flipping course by an Australian dude named CJ. I thought I'd tried to flip my blog to see if I can get some decent profit from it.

I followed the course's instructions to the letter and listed my blog on Flippa. To my utter surprise and delight, the flip was a fantastic success. I got more than 4 years' worth of my site's monthly income in just 5 days! My site was just getting about $10 per month through Adsense but it sold for $500 (50 months' income).

You can see my Flippa listing here:
automaticcoffeemachines.org - Website for Sale: Google Top 10 Niche Coffee Machine Site. Adsense Income. $1 No Reserve

It was my first and only site flip so far. Maybe it was beginners' luck. I've tried to get my other blogs to rank but haven't had the same success since then.

Today, I just checked that site's ranking out of curiosity. I entered "automatic coffee machines" (without quotes) into Google and my ex-blog came up No. 1 ! It's ranking better than before I sold it and it hasn't been updated with any new posts.

Maybe I should've just kept the blog and enjoy the Adsense income. Site flipping is okay for some quick cash but it's not really passive income unless you outsource it. On the other hand, Adsense is passive income.

What do you think- would you flip a site that's generating Adsense profit for you? Please share your thoughts and comments.

Regards,
Alex

Would I flip a site that is making money? That depends! If it is a site that I was working on constantly to earn that income and know that if I stop working on it then the income would stop - then I'd maybe sell it. If it was one that was passively earning money then I'd maybe keep it.
Also, it might depend on the niche. Some niches come and go and will earn good money while they are here, but if the niche becomes less in demand the income might drop. So if it was a blog with a limited time niche, then I'd flip it before the niche became obsolete.

Third reason - if I desperately needed money and had a site that could bring in a quick buck then I might flip it.

Flipping can be profitable but it is constant work and as soon as you stop working the income stops. I don't flip much anymore, but you don't have to make it a set in stone business. You can just work away on your own sites and if you feel at any time that the time is right to sell, then go ahead and sell.

the title of your post made me wonder.
i have been thinking the same thing.
i have a couple sports blogs that gets a 1k unique views a month.
i havent tried to monetize it hard, but i put one block of adsense to the side,
it doesnt make anything. wondering if someone would still buy it?
its has a pretty good domain too.

Your blog did go for a lot more than the average 5-10X monthly income, but I think what helped was that your blog looks pretty good, and in addition to that it ranked for multiple keywords. This is an evergreen niche that will be around for a long time to come (as opposed to the latest fad/craze), and that must have been a contributing factor as well. I think CJ's strategy works pretty well in getting people excited about your auction, and this no doubt had an impact on the ultimate price that your site went for.

Maybe the person who bought the blog did some more backlinks and promotion to get it to #1. I agree with Sheryl on the subject of flipping, if it is earning passive income I probably wouldn't flip it. I know some people that flip sites for some pretty good money. In fact, there are people in this forum with some great courses on how to do just that. So it may be something to look into. Nice looking blog!

Thanks for all your comments. Now if I ever get another blog to be earning Adsense consistently again, most probably I won't flip it.

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to flip for outrageous fortune, or take arms against a sea of debt....

    Yes, I would and have.

Your site sold for so much because it's hands off income and it's somewhat established. Flippa buyers love adsense sites making money or any site making money for that matter.

To flip or not to flip is dependent on your financial and professional goals. With the $500 dollars you made off that site. You could make 50 of those sites. If you made $10 a month on all of them, you have $500 a month, or you could hold them for a few months and Flip part or all of your network.

I think flipping should be a part of everyone webmaster business plan.
