How Do I Capture A Webinar So I Can View Later?

Hi!

I am attending a webinar & would like to record it so that I can watch it later. Is there any free software that will do this?

I tried CamStudio but I have Vista & cannot get it to work.

I think Camtasia Studio would work but I'm a pure beginner & don't know if I really need to spend $300 just to capture a webinar. I know there's a 30 day free trial version, but I'm trying to avoid a trial version & just get one that I don't have to worry about down the line.

So I'm looking for a way that is free that will allow me to record a webinar so that I can play it back later. I don't need any fancy gadgets or anything. I just need a way to "DVR" the webinar.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Here's an idea. I haven't tried it, but your mention of a way to 'DVR' the webinar triggered it.

Can you connect your computer to your TV? I know amazon sells converters for around $60. Add $10 for HDMI cable, if necessary, and you can record the webinar on your VCR or DVR or even a DVD recorder.

I know this will work after the fact, but don't know about during.

      Firefox + Flashgot + DownThemAll.

I have captured many "uncapturable" video/audio combos this way.

You could use free sites like screenr.com but most of them have a time limit. I think screenr has a 5 min limit, if I remember right. I'm not clear on why you want to 'avoid a trial' but using Camtasia would be the easiest and quickest. After you install it, you just click on "Record the screen" on menu and click Record. It really doesn't get any easier than that.

if you use firefox it should be in your cache directory. type in "about:cache" and it will show you the path to your cache dir.
Camtasia works great also in capturing anything that moves on your desk

Try BB FlashBack Express. It's freeware and should work on Vista.

Thank you all for responding. I downloaded a Trial Version of Camtasia Studio, but couldn't figure out how to use the thing.

I attempted to record a 6 hour webinar & it recorded the video, but for some reason didn't record the audio even though the "record system audio" was checked.

It was also a huge file recorded in the Camtasia default format.

I watched the tutorials they email you, & thought I did everything right, but apparently not.

Does anyone have any good links for how to use Camtasia for people who never even heard of Catasia until just recently?

      Thanks again.

I don't think that's what he's looking for, as he wants to capture video, not just take a screenshot. I think Camtasia would probably be his best bet, but there's a learning curve to it and he might have to spend some time figuring it out.

do a search for Replay Media Catcher. It is part of a suite of products that allow you to strip audio from video, record what ever is on your screen, record and download just about any audio or video file you could want.

I have used it a ton b/c I don't want to sit and watch a webinar. Basically it works just like a dvr, you just have to set it up. You can come back later and stop it.

        Hope that helps.

I want to echo Zaraks comment about FlashGot too.

It's very easy to download videos with it. Just click on a little icon in the corner of your screen and choose the download location.

It's also very handy when there are like 10 files and you cbf right click > saving each and every one of them. You can get everything ready to download in a queue with a few clicks.

I'm not actually TOO sure about recording a live webinar, however I don't worry about them too much because theres usually a replay a day or 2 later.

i also use camtasia but it took me some time to learn the whole process. FlashGot is simpler than the others for recording streamed videos.

but if you want to get a saved video online, the simplest solution i use is download helper for firefox. save the files as .flv or .mp4.

This is weird. It seems that I can get the audio on some of the things I try to capture, but not on everything.

For example, I used a youtube video as a test & it everything came out fine. Then I used a recorded webinar & again I could get both video & sound. Yet the other day when I recorded a long 6 hour webinar (actually it was a simulcast of a seminar) all I got was video, but no audio. Puzzling!

There is a key difference here which you may not realize. In the two instances where it worked, you were dealing with recorded video, whereas the live webinar didn't work. Something like this would record live video and audio, including webcam feeds - Replay Capture Suite

    Paulie,

Thanks for you help on this. That is a very good distinction that I hadn't thought about. So are you saying that Catasia Studio cannot record audio & video of a live event. It can only record something that is a replay?

If so, I may go ahead & get that Replay Capture Suite for the next time.

I was under the impression though that Camtasia Studio could record a live event because it's supposed to capture audio & video of what's on the screen. Why would it capture the video but not the audio of a live event?

    Thanks

I thought Snagit was a static image capture, not a streaming capture. I didn't see anything at the site about streaming.

Many people don't know about Snagit's video (and audio) capture capability, so I suppose this is one of its lesser known features. You can view all its features here, including its video capture capabilities -

I'll be darned...I'm surprised they hide this feature so well because it's something people are always looking for. They'd do a lot better to have that front page!

I know, I think they want people who are interested in video capture to buy their MUCH higher priced Camtasia Studio instead!
