I Need Some Ideas...In a Bind

As many of you know, I'm a WAHM and freelance writer. Unfortunately, I'm also in a rough spot. I had a baby in August, and was unable to work due to the surgery and some medical issues that she's had ever since. She had surgery on 11/4, and is hopefully on the mend. However, our finances aren't.

I had to severely reduce my client load for two months, and at the same time my husbands hours have been drastically cut. He teaches guitar lessons, and in the spring was easily working 20-30 hours per week in addition to his full time job, allowing us to just barely make ends meet. His hours have been cut back to around 5 per week, and he's literally making 1/3 of the income he was then. Now that I'm back to working full time, I'm having a hard time finding clients locally.

We have overdue medical bills, a late car payment, and are borrowing the rent money this month. In short, we're headed for drastic problems.

I've taken on a part time job to try to help out, but we're still struggling just to get by. We live in WV, and the economy is literally in the toilet, so there are very few jobs to be found. It's the kind of area where when you have a job you cherish it and work it until you retire or die not the kind where you can just go out and pick up some extra hours whenever you need to.

Now that I've completely embarrassed myself <sigh>

I was wondering if any of you have work that he or I can take on for you? Writing, squidoo, keyword research, blogging, building wordpress sites, etc. I'd be willing to do it at a lower rate than normal, in light of the situation that I"m in. I've run a few WSO's, but had little success lately. I also run a PLR membership site that I'm willing to offer reduced memberships to.

Do any of you have ideas for how to bring in some cash quickly? I'm willing to work, and I have some great plans in place, but they'll take time to carry out. For example, I have an offline seminar scheduled for January, which will probably help to expand my client base significantly. However, that doesn't help me now. I can write, I have hosting and an autoresponder, but no list.

Total amount we're in need of is only about $1200, which I know isn't a huge amount for successful marketers/IM'rs, but seems like a huge insurmountable goal right now. I'm not looking for handouts, but any advice is appreciated.

Sandi

      Hey Sandi,

Sorry to hear about your current problems.

Couple of ideas for you to consider.

Firstly, the PLR membership site you have. How about seeking out some JV partners and offer their customers an unbeatable deal - say $17 for 90 days access on a 50% split. If your membership full of great content, your retention rate should be good after this period. Do it via paypal and you can have the money in tyour bank account in a matter of days.

Secondly, if you're looking for $1200 or so, I'm willing to bet you have that lying around your house and more in the form of books, clothes, trinkets, cds etc.. that you can sell on eBay. Have a great clearout (good for the soul too!) and see what you come up with.

Hoping things work out for you,

      Iain

Thanks, Marie - returned your email

Iain - I've never really pursued a JV, and have no idea where I'd begin with something like that. My membership site also has a cap of 75 members, with about 30 currently, so I'm not sure how that would tie in...

PM's are being sent out now to everyone who's messaged me.

How are you doing on your goal?

What about selling PLR packs as a WSO? How about a PLR eBook or two? I know that you've been running some WSO's that haven't done much but maybe you can try again with some other topics? Holiday geared PLR seems like it would do well right now. One Warrior even posted a message wondering why not many seem to be offering it.

I'm a writer, too. When I need quick cash I hop on rentacoder and go on a bidding spree or I contact the writing team I am on at ExquisiteWriting.com. When I say bidding spree, I mean I'd make 5-10 bids a day until I got the work I needed for my goal. Then I delete the remaining bids so I don't get overwhelmed with too much work (that's happened before). I've worked on that team for several years now - it couldn't hurt to contact them and see if they're hiring and can give you some work.

You'll be able to make that money in no time, I'm sure of it. :-)

I have a squidoo lens where I shared a bid I made on rentacoder that resulted in a pretty lucrative gig. I use that as a template for all my bids now and have a high success rate. PM me if you want to see it.

Also, here are some sites you can sign up for to make money writing:

Today dot com - set up two blogs and post one blog post a day. That will give you $60 after thirty days. Not a lot, but you can write the posts fairly quickly. Every little bit helps. They also have a writer's marketplace.

constant-content dot com - take any PLR article you have the rights to still and post as non-exclusive. Answer calls for content that are listed in the content area. Once you sell to a client, follow up and they may buy more from you.

Associated Content - I used to submit to them all the time. They've gotten pickier and their rates have gone down. I hear if you target micro niches with highly relevant keywords it increases your chances. If they don't accept it, publish it non-exclusive and also put it on constant content under non exclusive. I googled you - I see you are on AC - you probably noticed that they've changed.

ehow - I stuck gold with one of my ehow articles. I've learned to research the keywords and find and make sure it's profitable on Adsense. I have an article that made it on the first page, first result of google and I have made A LOT of money through the compensation program. It was my main source of income last month and looks like I'll have a repeat month with it.

Between doing the above and bidding on projects online you'll make the $1200 in no time.

    Katherine -

Still quite a bit behind, I'm afraid. However, the warriors have given me a great start, and it's only been a few hours. Feeding the baby now, and then I'm going to dig in for the evening and start the writing

I was on today.com for awhile, but the$1 per post rate didnt seem worth it. AC and eHOW I've done - eHow through another company, but I may try submitting to them directly. I'll have to check my contract to be sure that that's allowed.

I've never tried constant content or rentacoder, though - have to check them out. I've got a few bids on guru.com, but the rates all seem really low. I'll check out rentacoder and elance - both have been suggested to me. I just worry about the fees to join, and if they'll be worth it.

I'd love to see your template - PMing you now.

There is no fee to join rentacoder but they take a commission. It was good in the beginning of my career because I didn't see paying a membership fee if I may not find any gigs on it. getalfreelancer also doesn't have any fees - they just take commission when you win the bid. I've never used eLance. I tried ifreelance but I paid the member fee and never really won a job. But I did find Exquisite Writing on there so in that sense it was worth it.

I know, I have two blogs at today.com and the $1 is hard to come to terms with. I pretty much stopped writing for them.

I know you can do it!

Things are starting to look up! I've been contacted by several wonderful Warriors who've offered small projects here and there, as well as a few with regular work. Even better, an online writing job that I applied for a month ago came through, and it's steady work with a one year contract. Just signed it yesterday - the money will literally double our income.

As one warrior suggested in a PM, my husband has started working alongside me at home. I'm showing him how to research, write articles, etc. - he's a huge help. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner!

For everyone who's PM'd me - I'm working up quotes this evening and tomorrow, and will send them all out. I got a HUGE number of suggestions and small jobs, and when I sit down and add them up, it looks like it'll be enough to make it through the next few weeks until the 1st, when my new writing job starts paying.

Thanks so much for all of your help - everyone!

      Hi Sandi,

Glad to hear things are starting to look up a bit for you. I recently had a very unexpected (and costly) stay in the hospital myself, so I know what it's like to have a pile of unwanted hospital bills!

You mentioned that your husband teaches guitar. Has he ever thought about recording short instructional videos and then posting them on YouTube (or better yet, TubeMogul)? That sort of thing seems to be pretty popular on YouTube, so if the videos are good it could definitely generate a pretty decent amount of traffic. Then you could monetize that traffic through affiliate links to paid guitar-related courses, videos, books, etc.

      Just a thought...

Yay! Isn't this forum great? It's nice to know that there is a place online to find helpful advice, etc when we're in a jam.

Oh, what a good idea! We're building him a guitar blog, so maybe we could link some videos with that...awesome.

And yes, everything is a struggle in WV. It's a great place to retire to, but not so great for actually getting to retirement. Most jobs are pretty low paying - even when I don't have a lot of clients, I make more online than I can make at a brick and mortar job, with a degree in psychology.

Thanks to everyone who's sent me work, leads, and more. I've found a full time writing job, and with that plus a few side jobs should be completely caught up in a month or so, as long as nothing else comes up.

    Now, back to the grindstone
