I think it really comes down to the domain name that you have chosen, the competition of the keyword and how you intend to build awareness/SEO.

www.randomdomain.org with poor content and 10 random backlinks wont do as well as www.randomdomain.org with relevant/helpful content and 50 solid backlinks and vice versa.

        Andrew said it right...

Google does not have a preference in Domain Extension when it comes to ranking.
    Both should work just fine.

If your domain of choice has more that one word in the name, maybe you can consider adding a Hyphen "-" and try again at a .com version.

    Eg: buyfood.com => buy-food.com

This also does not affect your rankings.

    Good luck!

Always go for keywordname.com but if it's not available I would go or keywordname.org. Then again from what I understand it doesn't matter what domain extension you have, but a .com, .org, .net are the top 3 you should choose.

.info's are cheap but they shouldn't be used for your main money sites (but then again some people do and do it well).

Also, using a domain such as keyword-name.com (.org, .net, etc) with the "-" will not affect rankings either as stated above. The only thing it affects in my mind is that when a visitor wants to come back to your site they may forget that you had "-" in your domain and end up going to someone else's site. But if you have decent SEO skills and/or the keyword is very low competition, it could work.

    Doesn't make a difference.

The real question is what do you plan to do with the domain.

If you are using it for backlinks or SERP listings, then it doesn't really matter.

However, if you are looking for this to be a destination site, then I would seriously reconsider the URL I am about to use. Would you want to build up a good business, only to have folks think of, refer people to your .com competitor instead of your site?

In my personal experience, a .org will rank way faster and higher than a .net with the same promotional efforts.

Your domain name is essential if you want to be considered ranking high on Google. Here are some alternatives:

For example, if your website is on dog food, then i recommend this method in choosing a domain.

    - dogfood.com
    - dogfood.org
    - dogfood.net

If all are gone, then should choose a domain with the keywords in it, such as:

    - buydogfood.com
    - greatdogfood.com
    - cheapdogfood.com

    Hope it helps.

I prefer .net and have never tried a .org because of questions that may come up for profits. So when it comes to SEO, I personally have no experience with a .org. But with a .net I have never found it anywhere difficult to rank, and I have had reasonably easy page-1 and #1 rankings in Google.com using .net domains. I can not compare though whether the same efforts would bring a .org to the top or not since I never have done that.

I don't believe it will make any difference at all as far as ranking goes - both will rank well if you put in the seo time and effort.

Personally, I prefer .net as I always relate .org names to charity sites for some reason so I don't like using them for any website. If I can't get a .com name then I will go for .net

      I would go with ".net"

Because as many of the awesome Warriors said above....a ".org" is synonymous of charity-non profit.

With that said...if you want to position your site/offer/yourself as an authority...a .org could work in that regard.

I still prefer .com over anything...and I highly suggest that you try to think of more words to add to your domain to grab a .com

      Example: say golfsecrets.com was taken.

      Just get a bestgolfsecrets.com or progolfsecrets.com

Depends on the nature of the site - I personally have not seen different results in SEO with either.
