Keyword: Stretch marks

About 1,480,000 results (according to google.com)

Obviously that keyword is going to be extremely hard to compete in. But if I were competing for something like

keyword: stretch marks after giving birth

About 65,800 results (according to google.com)

It would be much better to go with this keyword cause it has very low competition. But what I don't get is when you check on Google AdWords: Keyword Tool I came up w/ this

I'm confused. Which one do I look at when looking for a niche to start promoting in...

also this isn't my niche I was just using it as an example

Actually those numbers are the broad terms. The actual competition is 90,100 in quotes and 183 total competitors. However if the term does not get any traffic it is not worth it at all. You are correct through it is ten times easier to rank for a term like stretch marks after giving birth then it is for stretch marks. However pay close attention to the search results. I personally will not chase a keyword that does not produce atleast 1k exact searches a month.

This is because if you take that 1k searches for the exact term and stretch it out over a month that is only 33 possible visitors a day for that exact term. There for anything under that yea you could get some traffic but not enough you will see consistent paychecks.

So yea it is good to go for a search long tailed search term like stretch marks after giving birth but that search term is a waste of time if it doesnt have more then 1000 exact searches a month under its belt. We will just take your term stretch marks after giving birth and prove a point on it. The total number of competitors is well well with in reason. However the search term it self will only bring you in on average 2 visitors a day. This is not something I want to even waste my time with. Especially if I was just starting out. This would just bring you more frustration then you would be able to deal with. Which in turn would cause any one to quit really fast.

Granted I also did not generate these with googles keyword tool. For it would take far to long to search the competition. So anyone looking for a new project and has the experience or knowledge in stretch marks. Here is a good list to get you started with.

Thanks! What would be considered good # to work with? More than 1k global monthly searches less than 10k?

Also is there any better more precise free keyword tools, or is google the best of it's class.

If you are going after a keyword with SEO you need to look at the number of searches ( greater than 1k exact match as per above). You also then need to asses the competition by having a look for competing pages for "phrase" match for example (SEOC in Market Samurai). It is the number on sites gaunt just under the search box in Google. The lower the number, the better your chance to rank quickly. There are many views on this but I don't go after keywords with more than 50k competing pages.

There are some good free training on this on the Market Samurai website.
