Why do people hate blogger?

Hi warriors,

I see lot of people complaining that blogger is bad and we should switch to wordpress.I dont understand why.It is the same thing actually, they are both blogging platforms.I know we don't own it but at least it is free. They dont charge us anything and I find it seo optimised. We dont have to pay for hosting and domain. Now don't get me wrong but I use wordpress too and it is excellent. But what is so bad about blogger?I also heard stories of people who got banned from blogger, may I know the reason why?I am sure they wont ban you until you break one of their TOS.I would also like to know the bad points about blogger.

Josh

p.s. if you want to build a long term business then it is good to go for wordpress.

If you want to get serious about blogging then you need a self-hosted blog powered by wordpress. You get more control and can do much more, especially with all the plugins out there for WP. There really is no comparison.

Its not that "hate" blogger - I want control over my content. I want to be able to upload my own files, and have control over those files.

I want to be able to post something, with have to worry about meeting someone elses quality control guidelines.

I want to have my own blog, where I make my own rules.

I think this is probably the reason for most. ... Sploggers hate Blogger.

Be wary of people complaining about being caught breaking the rules. These are not people you want to take advice from.

Agreed. It's best to get advice from people who don't get caught.

A lot of the people who recommend Wordpress over Blogger are talking about using Wordpress hosted on your own domain, not the free Wordpress.com sites.

Hosting it yourself gives you far more control, you can use any plugins you want, etc. And there's no chance of getting banned.

If you compare Blogger to Wordpress.com there's not so much of an advantage since in both cases another entity can ultimately control your site (ie. ban it).

I meant the self hosted wordpress. My question:why would they ban your site for no reason?

As others have said, a self hosted site gives you total control.

The only people who "hate" blogger are probably people who got banned for breaking the rules. Otherwise, there's no reason to "hate" it. ... It's either something you want (with its limitations and free price), or it's not. No hate involved.

They wouldn't. Usually you have to breaking their TOS by spamming or trying to game their platform in one way or another.

I still love blogger but have switched over to my own self hosted WP in the last 6 months. I am loving it too. But I still have a few blogs hosted on blogger. Of course , I highly recommend to use your domain with blogger and splurge $10 a year on it. I.ts totally worth it.

Recently hubpages has flagged lots of hubs and even deleted them for building links through spamming(forum profiles etc).So my question is if we do that with blogger, will they delete my blog?I am sure some of you have built links to blogger through forum profiles, did any one of you get banned?

            Here is the bottom line:

Third party platform (blogspot, wordpress.com) they can and WILL take
your site away from you for the littlest reason. And with WordPress, you
cannot use it for monetary purposes...period.

Your own hosted platform - You can do anything you want within reason.
Sure, if your hosting company doesn't like porn sites and you try to put
up a porn blog, they can kill your hosting, but then you just get another
            hosting company.

You DON'T want to let a third party control your fate...period.

You answered your own question in the P.S.

If you just want a medium for posting random thoughts
or rants by all means use Blogger. If you want to build an
actual business use something you control.

Isn't blogger good for linking? As a quick and fast way to post information, blogger is great. If you intent to monetize a blogand flip it then you have to self host but as a SEO strategy use blogger as part of your empire... but don't put all your eggs in a blogger basket, Google has a way of breaking eggs.

I agree...There are many benefits to having resources on third-party sites.

I don't see it as a case of either/or but rather "both". I would rather have a 10 page Blogger blog and a 40 page self-hosted WP blog, than just a 50 page self-hosted WP blog. Way more benefits to having both, especially when Blogger is so easy to automate using a variety of free services.

Kurt, I agree as long as you don't have EVERYTHING riding on that platform.

I use blogger, for lots of things. But I don't put everything into them. What
if they delete my account? I'm screwed.

As an addition to your own hosted sites, sure. But as your whole
business model, that's just plain suicide.

It's not that Blogger is bad but for under 40 cents a day, it's worth the peace of mind to have your blog on your own host and not worry about having your content end up being deleted....It's all about control!

Within the past year or so Google, who owns Blogger, has cracked down on Blogger blogs for reasons beyond just obvious spamming or stated TOS reasons. This has included a number of well ranking and well regarded blogs and not just the infamous 'make money online' one. Often the reason given was quite unclear (ie typical Google). While most of these have been restored it is an annoyance and potentially costly to those who were affected by it. Basically, in an effort to combat spam and copyright violations, they made Blogger a much more unfriendly place for anyone to host a blog, even if they follow the rules.

Secondly, they have shown a recent tendency not to rank as well as non-Blogger properties, even those on subdomains. I don't know why this is and I haven't thoroughly researched it yet but they do seem to have discounted them in some way, probably yet another overreaction.

Lastly, self-hosted content management solutions, such as WordPress, now offer a richer set of features where Blogger has remained more or less stagnant since around 2005.

For the simple reason of you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket.

I didn't know they weren't ranking as well - that's fascinating! I would have thought it would have been otherwise.

I am not a huge blogger fan mainly because once I found wordpress, i really didn't see a whole lot of reason to use much else, especially if I am doing an actual blogging platform. You get excellent content control and layout control plus the fact that you can build blogs, squeeze pages, landers etc all fairly easily in Wordpress does it for me. Its not so much that I hate blogger, its that when you compare the offerings of the 2, especially for an online marketer, well there just isn't much comparison.

I love how people justify using Blogger and other free platforms for the sole reason that they are "free". If you're too cheap to spend $10 on a domain name that lasts for an entire year and $10 per month on hosting, then this is not for you.

How many times do you go out for lunch and spend $10 or go to the movies or out to the bar with friends? You probably waste $10 way more than you think but yet spending money to invest into your business is not something that people want to do.

Blogger and all the other free platforms are good for throwing quick articles on and linking back to your own self-hosted money site, but they are not good for using as your money site for reasons that others have already mentioned - primarily, getting it banned and shut down.

Not to mention, having YourSite.Blogger.com looks more unprofessional and you can't sell it down the road even if you wanted to since you don't own it.

I hate them because I wrote a 100% unique blog about raising bearded dragons that linked back to my own domain. Woke up one morning to it gone - no chance to download my files or anything. What a crock! And I'm anything BUT a spammer.
