"The Golden Town is the Golden Town no longer. They have sold their pillars for brass and their temples for money, they have made coins out of their golden doors. It is become a dark town full of trouble, there is no ease in its streets, beauty has left it and the old songs are gone." - Lord Dunsany, The Messengers

You should be willing to fork up a little investment in design, they can cost really cheap at about $47.

      $47 is not cheap

If you are running your business correctly it is.

A 47 dollar professional looking website design on a campaign that will drive thousands of possible buyers to either your offer or a vendors offer in which you get paid for can easily = thousands of dollars in revenue.

People, especially newbies, don't like to think this, but there is a cost to making money online, either in time or money.

I can do things myself, all for free, and have it look like garbage (in this example) or I can pay a competent person to do it for me, freeing up MY time to work on way more important things - like networking, further outsourcing, etc.

The very first thing anyone should learn is that the value of something isn't in the money paid, but in the service provided.

So, 47 bucks for a professional design is dirt dirt cheap.

The only freebie I can think of is rolling up your sleeves and knocking it out yourself. Headers aren't that hard with a bit of practice.

I know you are looking for a free way, but maybe if you go to Fiverr.com you can find there a lot of talented designers who will create a header for you only for $5.

As a couple others already mentioned Xheader is free. If you don't have any graphics editing software, but you have Power Point. Here's what I have done.

    1. Download Gimp (free)
    2. Down load paint.net (free)
    3. Download Xheader (free)
    4. Open Power Point - I used it because it would make fancier text effects than Xheader has the ability to do.
    5. In power point, open a new slide
Click on text box and type in your headline
Click Format (Here's where you are going to have to just get in there and play around with all the things you can do with your text. The Shape effects feature is where your text will really take shape.
You can fill the text with a picture like clouds or money with the text fill tool.

When you are satisfied with your headline text then right click and copy.
Paste it into Paint.net and save it as an image.
When you are inside of Xheader you can import it and resize it and move it around.

Now, if you are not using one of the templates in Xheader, you will need to import a graphic. Also you can set the dimensions of the header you want to make, including banner ads.

Here's a couple of sites with free graphics, Photos8.com and morguefile.com

Save your selected graphic to your computer.

    Now open Gimp
We are going to make the background of that photo transparent so you can place it on your Xheader design.

From Gimp click file and open, then browse to get the picture you saved previously.
    Then Click:
    Layer
    Transparency
    Add Alpha Chanel
Click the fuzzy selector tool ( on the left side of the page)
Click on the background area you want to make transparent
    Hit the delete key.

To save it, click file, save as, and save it as a png or gif.

Now you can import that image into Xheader. Go into Xheader and click image.

I'm sure all of this can all be done from Gimp, but I don't know how to do that.
Xheader and paint.net are simple programs with small learning curves.

I know this is ridiculously long using 4 programs, but this is what I could figure out how to do, when I couldn't pay anyone and didn't have a Adobe Photoshop. Even now that I have Adobe it has a huge learning curve.

I hope this helps, if not with your current project then perhaps it will help someone else.

    Maureen
