Quick WP pinging question

Am I safe to assume that clicking the update button on by WP blog constitutes pinging it? i.e. is updating WP the same as using pingomatic for Blogger.com?

If not, what action does "ping" WP?

I'm using cPanel/fantastico WP

thanks

Update Services are tools you can use to let other people know you've updated your blog. WordPress automatically notifies popular Update Services that you've updated your blog by sending a XML-RPC ping each time you create or update a post. In turn, Update Services process the ping and updates their proprietary indices with your update. Now people browsing sites like Technorati or Sphere can find your most recent posts! Unquote

If you have a few sites added into your Wordpress update services list(Settings>Writing), then you are safe to assume that your posts will be pinged once you hit the publish or update button.

Here is the list that I use:

    http://api.feedster.com/ping

      Thank guys

What's the difference/relationship between using the above ping list, and submitting to places like Onlywire, Digg, Pingoat, Reddit, and Stumble upon?

Are they separate methods - would there be any x-fertilisation?

Pinging your post/page and bookmarking it are completely different things. Actually the goal is same, to let the web know about your post. Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon and Delicious are social bookmarking sites where you bookmark your sites/posts or other stuff that you find useful/interesting on the web. That's a way of getting traffic and backlinks. And there are some applications that speeds up the bookmarking process for you like Onlywire, Socialmarker and Ping.fm

You should also use this plugin so if you do edits it doesn't keep pinging and get you banned.

Any decently coded ping site, which most are these days, will simply ignore duplicate pings within a few minutes of each other, especially ones that obviously aren't automated such as simply updating a post a couple of times to correct a spelling or grammar errors. Only true ping spamming by automated software that will do 1000's of pings per second will get you banned. The banning thing is used as a scare tactic by some plugin creators to help them build a list.
