Question about hiring a VA from outside the US

If I'm hiring someone outside the US as Virtual Assistant, do I need to give them anything like 1099 for tax purposes? Or do I just file what I paid them as expenses at year end on my 1040?

You might want to check with an accountant to make sure that you have the correct information. The tax laws can be very ambiguous sometimes.

1099s are only for US residents. The US isn't collecting tax from foreigners so they could care less if you send them something that they have to submit to their government.

Ask your accountant, but I when I did my taxes last year and asked about my Philippines team he told me I didn't need to do anything and just mark it as an expense. There were some large amounts for Canadians I worked with as well, and he said not to worry.

There is a special form that you can use for foreign payments, but according to my accountant it's not required... seems it would be quite easy to launder yourself money to a foreign bank account and not pay taxes, lol... not my bag, though.

If anyone knows otherwise, please advise, but I did save the email conversation with my accountant in case I needed to provide proof that I was advised otherwise by a tax professional, in which case if an issue did come to light the responsibility would fall on his shoulders.

Similar thing happened when my old CPA setup my S-Corp and forgot to file some very important documents and I was receiving letters asking for $10,000+ in fines. It was all dismissed because it was his error.

Lol, just hit my 1099 post mark, how ironic is that?

Thank you Scott. I sure will check with my accountant, but just want to hear inputs from others who have done this before.
