The first bit of this video explains what Wordpress is, so you can skip to about 6 minutes through if you already know.
I haven't gone through all of this particular free tutorial, as I learned from somewhere else, so just give this thread a holler if you get stuck.

You can go to Youtube.com and type in there how to learn Wordpress or how to setup Wordpress. You can also use Cpanel which comes with your hosting, inside there you can use Fantastico De Luxe. And once again if you are still lost. You can type in What is Cpanel into Google.

I created my site through wordpress as well I wouldn't have chosen anything else to do my site with. Youtube is by far the best way to go when setting a WP site as its easier to navigate the junk from good stuff. Good Luck!

Hi Jeremy,

What do you want to do? Installing a templates or plugins? If it's something more advanced like "creating your own templates", you should have knowledge in HTML and PHP.

Lot's of good advice here. I just want to add that don't be afraid to jump in and get going with it. It's very easy and you can always undo what you did if you don't like it. I wish I would have found Wordpress the first time out. It would have saved me a lot of money. Best wishes for your endeavors.

If you have any programming experience and want to get started with plugins or templates then I would recommend studying existing plugins. You can get an idea of how hooks are used and the "flow" of events that happens behind the scenes, such as after a post is made, a comment is made, etc.

It really is a very elegant system for what it does.

I was having the same question Jeremy when i first installed wordpress through fantastico (cpanel). But its not that hard, there are many tutorial videos on the web to hep you out. Remember that whenever you add a plugin or a theme you must upload it through your host client to wp-content/themes or wp-content/plugins.

I appreciate all of the suggestions and input.

I have purchased the site through Godaddy. The wordpress that I can install on it, I believe, is Wordpress 3.0, and, the majority of the videos on Youtube are 2.something.

There are a ton of free Wordpress tutorials out there. Just make sure the tutorials are for the correct version. Lots of changes in 3.0.

I think you should first use wordpress.com to get the feel of it. Then after that you can move to your own hosted wordpress installation.

To learn wordpress you can use official site : Learn WordPress.com

This guide teaches you how to use wordpress for blogging step by step.

I am so techie challenged it is not even funny, the way I learned is by playing with it. Used my Cpanel account on my host to install it. Does Godaddy hosting have Cpanel? If not may I suggest a dedicated hosting company. I use bluehost many other here love Hostagator.

Once it is up and you log into the Dashboard play around make posts ad Images etc..
Then you will have more specific questions. I found trying to get a learn Wordpress book or video either It was way over my head or everything I already knew. Now I can get specific training modules I really need.

Also most premium themes have a how to guide for the specific theme that has also helped me a great deal.

Go to YouTube and search for WordPress tutorials. There are people in there who have entire channels devoted to WordPress tutorials.

It depends on what you want to do.

I'd only learn it if I had to. Meaning if you've got spare dosh then don't bother learning it and just get yourself someone else who knows how to do it and ask them to do it all for you.

However if it's a career like move then the first step is to install a copy. Then to start fiddling and keep on fiddling until eventually you'll know the insides and outs of it all.

If you already know code (HTML/CSS) and are a quick learner then you will learn WP pretty quickly.

Whichever way you go. Only learn it if you have to. If you know another way to avoid learning something so complicated then do that instead.

Wordpress is popular for its user friendliness. You will find numbers of online tutorials and videos to get help from. it is based on 'what you see is what you get' so that you dont have any problem in conceptualizing your website.

It's interesting how different the posts are from various people in this thread based on their own level of intuitiveness with new software, etc.

"It's pretty easy, just install and experiment with it"
"Read the official documentation, it's all explained"
"Read a book"
"Watch some step by step video"

It just goes to show the different and varied ways that different people learn. Yeah... put me in the "show me some step by step video" category. :-) Reading product documentation usually makes my eyes glaze over.

Set up a secondary blog on your server/domain and mess about with that and learn from the mistakes

So if your main blog is at http://my-blog. com set up a 2nd one at http://myblog. com/learn-wp and play with it to your hearts content while learing. At the same time use wordpress.org to find answers to problems and read wordpress related blogs (check out Free Technology Tutorials - By Figaro, one of the experts on wordpress.org forums.

I learned Wordpress through trial and error, but also signed up for this: Online WordPress Training and Support - Open Source Training

It is not an affiliate link. The guys respond to forum posts within 24 hours too. It really starts off with the basics and even though I knew Wordpress pretty well..I still learned something.

I was confused as hell at first too on how to set up my own wordpress site. I totally totally recommend Craig's free Wordpress tutorial (an ebook) at idiotproofblogging.com. Screenshots are available which makes it easier for you. You will have to subscribe first to get the ebook. Read it - it's free and a great resource for newbies!

I read a few initial guides on baisc WordPress stuff when I first started using it a couple of years ago, but most of what I learned has been through trial and error. If I need a theme to do something specific that it doesn't already do, I go to Google and look up how to do it, then try to implement it, practicing over and over until I get it to work like I want it to. That's the best way to learn WordPress, IMO.
