How Do You Put Yourself In The Mood To Work?

I work hard on my online business. I don't waste time surfing YouTube or any other non-productive stuff.

However, sometimes I struggle with getting in the mood to work. I'm sure we all get this.

Do you have any tips on getting yourself in the mood to do work and make some progress with your business?

I normally write down 3 tasks for the day, when I don't feel like doing anything and push myself to start working.

Ted Nicholas mentioned that listening to Mozart does wonders for him and his students.

Do you have any good tips you'd like to share?

I listen to music that makes me feel confident. When I am confident, it makes me more productive. I have also started making a to do list for the day. I try my best to get those tasks done but it doesn't always work .

I will be launching my site very soon(In 1-2 weeks) so I am just finishing up the final tasks. Then, I will just be able to focus on marketing my site, rather than making products all the time. I am also starting a major project after I launch my current project.

I just want to commit to the to-do list and stay focused on my goals. I try my best to stay away from the distractions on the net, but it's pretty hard . That's what she said!!

If you're on a Mac, I'd like to recommend two pieces of software that have been game changers for me...

Things - This is a Mac app that helps sort your to-dos. You can set recurring To-dos for daily tasks, and you can create a "someday" to-do list for all things you're planning to do in the future. When you're ready, drag and drop that item in to your "Today" list. It also integrates with your iPhones and iPads. I couldn't live without it now.

Freedom - This is another Mac app that allows you to disconnect from the internet for a certain amount of time. When you need to get something typed up or get work done offline, set this app to take you offline for about 2 hours. When times up, your internet starts working again. This helps you from getting easily distracted by e-mails, stats, etc.

It's hard not to get in to a productive mood when you've got nothing else to do

    Hope that helps a little,
    Matt

Two ways to get in a powerful mood to work (for me at least):

    1. Listen to some music that really gets me pumped up (Girl Talk is really good for this)

    2. Get up and move around for 5-10 minutes to get the blood flowing. Shake your arms loose and just stretch every muscle.

**Big killer is outside distraction like TV in the background, best thing is to turn that beast off**

Why did you start your business in the first place? Do you have children? Well, think about their future... and doing enough in your business to secure your childrens well being.

Stay focused on your end result. Can you see what your dream life looks like? Imagine how it will feel, look, smell like, taste like... when you've full acheived your goal. After you know what your end result is and what it will be like... wake up every morning as if you're living in that end result.

It can be easier said than done... I know. However, this is about creating your successful business. Fight for it. Don't get slack.

Also, think about some of the top companies in the world... they wouldn't be where they were if they didn't fight slackfulness.

      Lol, this forsure.
Music, and realizing i "want more". If you want more, you'll keep working hard until you get it. So setting a goal, even if it's not written down (but writing goals down are best) will help motivate you to work so you can obtain your goals.

Responsibilities can be a powerful motivator. No question.

I think this question really depends on what works for you, and you
may have to experiment to find what does it for you.

Fortunately, there are times when I don't have to work if the "mood"
is strongly against it. But I can't go for long like that. Plus it usually
doesn't last long because I enjoy what I do which is writing.

Part of doing the "work" thing is doing it even when you don't feel like
doing it. But for me at least, I find that once I get started then that
      mood dissipates.

I tend to not think about it. I just know what needs to be done each
day, and I know I'll do it.

I read something in the Mind Warriors forum that I thought sounded
interesting. So I tried it, and it seemed to work quite well for me, so I'll
      tell you about it.

I think the thread concerned procrastination and included one person's
      strategy for dealing with it.

He said to just tell yourself you're going to do one small thing.

He found that it worked well more often than not.

So I tried it when I had one of those moods you're talking about, and it
actually was effective. For me, it produced enough of a shift in perspective
that I had no problem dealing with the "mood."

Since I write for a living, my small thing was to sit down and write a paragraph,
or even a sentence when the mood was sufficiently stubborn. So I did it. I
wrote the sentence, or paragraph, and then it just didn't matter. I was able
to easily keep writing and the mood was gone.

But that worked well for me. You should experiment and see what works for you.

The easiest way to think about boosting your motivation is wanting to improve your life. For example, I want to fly in a personal helicopter from place to place doing business as usual, not drive in a little car and get stuck in traffic when I'm already 20 minutes late for a business meeting.

Keep your eyes on the money. Get addicted to it. Make money is a good addiction.

Grinding through the daily junk is just what you have to do. Its your job.

But moments of inspiration are different. I have found that there are times when I am amazingly creative and powerful. I cant really control them. But when they come, it usually means 6 figures just got added to my income.

So, i generally try to not stress about the day to day... and just try to identify when i am in that rare time when it is all amazingly simple - and i try to create as much as i can in that state...

What I usually do is look at my earnings from the past day or even the past month. Then I think something like, "man it would be nice if I was making double that". Just reminding myself that I have already succeeded in creating a small but decent passive income from SEO gets me motivated to work harder to make more.

1.Stand up, stretch and take a short break. A couple of deep breaths will also do.

    2. Play a music while working

    3. Play a quick game just to relax and keep your mind working after that but make sure you have a set a time limit.

    4. Take a power nap

    5. Splash water on your face

    Here's what I do.

Get out of bed, shower, go for a walk around town for half an hour (clears my head), grab breakfast & read a paper (I often find inspiration for my daily blogging in the papers).

If I try and work without first leaving the house, I'm far less productive. The sights, sounds and smells of the outside world stimulate my mind enough to get busy. It also reminds me of my goal which is to move out of the UK and to somewhere better.

It also helps to DRESS for business! After all it's business you're doing, right? Iron a shirt. But forget the tie!

Yes, I sometimes feel like that too, particularly after the last 13 years!!! The beauty of IM is that we can have an "office" anywhere we like

My day job is quite soul-destroying (but too well paid to quit!), and funds my IM activities until they match my pay cheque.

So yes, I'm often in no mood for IMing when I get home, but the exciting potential drives me on.

My tip: Dress for the office everyday. Even when staying at home.

Some days I work from home and that of course can be full of distractions. So I shower & dress as if I was going to the business office and I stick to break times.

That works for me when working from home.

The solution on the long term is awareness, not will power.

It's one of the biggest problems my private students have when it comes to making money in any business.

We coach our students about learning to see your life from a long term perspective.

It's the same like loosing weight, you can't do it all by will power.

Many people get it wrong, but: Motivation does NOT work. It will work for a certain time, but then bite you in the ass.

If you are not in the mood to work it's natural, don't try to fight that with motivation.

Most of these FEELINGS occur, because you hunt for a dream or optimism etc. Or you just hunt for money.

Take one white paper sheet and write who you will be in 10 years+

If you do this really detailed you will think about your future like many people DON'T do, they just follow something, but they DON'T lead their life. This is the point.

You have to become YOUR life-leader with 100% awareness.

If you like to, hang your papersheet in front of you and everytime you have a hard time working you'll be aware of the picture you've painted on that sheet.

If you don't feel like working don't do it, no need to fight that. It's up to YOUR pick of your future, don't try to push you into success or work. It's a natural feeling not wanting to work etc.

But that's NOT a problem YOU have, it's something we all have, I've made multi-millions and still feel that, you're not alone ;-)

It's not you, it's all of us.

Don't fight with yourself, but be aware of your future, of your picture you paint for yourself!

    TK

Depends a lot on your personality so all the ideas put forward are mainly subjective. But when you say you put down 3 items for the day... does that fill the day?
You need to have a "to do" list for the whole day. The trick is to put a few simple tasks to start the day and when they have been ticked off the list then just maybe you will be in the swing of things.

      Hi
Procratination is a bad habit you easily can put down and achieve your goal quicker....

Say to yourself your goal is at the top of the mountain...You carry a bag full of tools to get you on top of that mountain...If there's is a item in that bag that ..prevent you to move forward..just take it out of your bag...and you will definitely move faster..........to achieve your goal.

      Thanks Never Give Up!

  • I find what helps a lot is working in 50 minute chunks. I set a timer and focus on just one thing for 50 minutes. Then I take a break for 10 minutes in which I stretch a little bit and then do some meditation/visualization--imagining the achievement of my overall goal. This gets me pumped for what I'm trying to accomplish.

Then I work for another 50 minutes and take a long break to go unwind and get a bite to eat. A few of these similarly scheduled blocks over the course of a day helps me a get a lot of focused work in without feeling hesitant to get started--after all, when I know I just have to dedicate myself for 50 minutes, that's not so bad, and sometimes when the 50 minutes is up, if I'm engaged, I just keep on going.

It can be tough to take action every day especially when you work for yourself and have no one telling you what to do it is easy to take it easy sometimes.

But what i use to motivate me is to think of all the traffic or revenue i won't get if i don't take consistent action.

It also really helps just to get started, this can be by sitting at your desk. You find that you start on your tasks and once you get into them, you see them through to completion

    Hope this helped

I tend to fight if I start the day by working, then I am more likely to get more work done that day. If I start my day messing around, checking emails and browsing etc, then I find that my day will mostly be taken up with that kind of stuff.

I also take a short break (15-30 mins) every 2 hours or so.

I used to write lists of things I wanted to get done that day/week/month etc, but these lists never really helped me. What has been working for me more these days is to write a list of tasks I have completed at the end of the day. I can the measure how productive I am being, and set a benchmark/standard for myself that I can push to constantly meet.

One of the things I do is to listening to music. The genre depends on my mood. But I agree with one post above about responsibilities. It's one of the best motivator especially if you can imagine yourself "after" the consequences of not working. That gives me the daily boost.
