Like it or not, iPads are getting Big Love.

While I would like to avoid a Apple/iPad bashing thread, the truth is people are loving it:

News Headlines

"He told me that the iPad, even at this early stage, pulled up Apple’s overall numbers – which makes it the highest-scoring product Apple has, and therefore the highest-scoring product ACSI has ever tracked."

But what this may very well really mean is a seismic shift to more portable devices as more competition will soon be in the tablet market. (RIM just had a press conference showing off their most recent tablet.)

With more portable devices accessing the internet as opposed to desktop computers, I feel it is critically important to have your content ready and viewable for those devices, in particular video - which (if self-hosted) needs the new HTML5 standards to be access on the iPhone or iPad.

5 Tools For Integrating HTML5 Video in Your Website

Last year I heard a report on a respected podcast that internet usage on devices actually eclipsed desktop/laptop computers. I was shocked! Now I am sure that includes a lot of social media surfing, but I really think internet surfing in general will be dominated by devices soon enough, as the technology race will make it more and more practical for end-users.

Are you ready for such changes, and if so, how will you be making adjustments?

I have had some customers purchase my info products from their ipads so it definitely is something you should optimize for.

Not to mention (and I will look for the reference to this study in a lil) that a study has shown that iPad users are 4X as likely to make online purchases than those using a pc or iPhone. Study was done for the app store but I think it applies to other online purchases as well.

The first thing I did with the iPad is check out how some of my sites looked.

      Awesome.

Better than a big computer screen in some respects because the iPad will display vertically or horizontally depending on how it is held. Vertically, one can read an entire page without scrolling.

It's Called the Apple store but if you have a Best Buy closer, that will work too lol. I got mine the day it come out in the states and a month before they had even become available in Canada.

I love it and now with the VLC Player App, it plays all my .AVI video files!

Sad part is I will probably buy a new one every year as they make updates like the retina display. Going to be expensive lol

It's one of the first things I am going to buy when I turn a profit.

I would sell my firstborn for one.

(Heck, I would sell my firstborn for anything just to get him out of my hair for a while, but don't tell him I said so)

Seriously guys? Stop hyping this thing up... there is no doubt in mind that this device and devices like it are going to continue to grow in numbers and be used for browsing and what not, being ready is crucial... but as far as the device itself the Ipad is just a glorified iphone that is overpriced by at least a few hundred dollars. I would much rather buy a laptop for the same price and have the piece of mind that I can use the software and not have to worry about compatibility issues. Others might see more purpose in it but right now the price is just too high for what it is. Between my blackberry and my laptop the Ipad offers absolutely 0 value for business use, it sure makes a nice flashy toy though.

I own one and I think the only thing it has in common with the iPhone is the OS. It holds its own in my house, the whole family competes for it -- even though everyone has their own iPhone.

This is not a replacement for a laptop IMHO, and if you can only afford one go for the laptop. You said business use, but I'm specifically thinking of home use here (although I have heard it's pretty popular in conference rooms). For kicking back on the couch, there's nothing I'd rather have than my iPad.

As I've mentioned above, while Apple may be the first to market with a mainstream tablet, big G is just around the corner and will provide a much more sophisticated alternative to the iPad's dumbed down OS.

It seems these days that everyone comes to market after Apple has innovated. Same as in the old days with Microsoft. I am biased though. Our IM biz has 10 apple products and two PCs. Glad for options.

Well, technically I'd say that Google was first, as they had acquired Android well before the iPhone was even released, and had already been working on it for several years since 2005. However, they kind of dragged their feet in bringing it to market.

Anyone who says it is a big ipod obviously does not own one or spent a substantial amount of time with it.

Fact is no matter how many of you think it is "too expensive" well over 2 million people have purchased one in just the few months since it's launch. Not only that but if you have analytics installed on your site that gets any amount of decent traffic...

In your visitor info it will tell you exactly how many of them viewed your sales page using an iPad. I was blown away by how many people have actually viewed my site with one not to mention bought my product with it as well.

I am now even working on exact download instructions for my customers who purchase my ebooks just to use on their iPads

Balckberry is launching their "playBook" HP is launching a WebOS tablet and the "Slate"... it would be foolish to write off tablets.

No one's writing them off. However, I had mentioned above that it'd be foolish for anyone to think that the iPad is going to have a monopoly on the market, with a massive onslaught of Android tablets as well as the BB Playbook and HP Slate on the horizon.

Exactly! I'd also venture to say that well over 50% of the time, they're using it for entertainment and general browsing, not real productivity.

lol ... yeah. Amusing yourself with iPad games is a good way to pass the time through a boring company meeting.

I'm personally glad I didn't jump on the tablet bandwagon. I prefer real functionality for my spending bucks and there's nothing in a tablet that you can't get from a nice laptop and there's so much more in a laptop. That's where my next dollars will be spent ... getting a new laptop, as mine seems to be dying.

This would be making the assumption that they are also going away, which I feel is a disastrous proposition for business growth. Internet access is now more wide-spread on devices than it is on desk-tops or lap-tops, and that pendulum is swinging hard.

I have read so many more ebooks from this very forum because of how the iPad is so convenient. I have also caught up on a lot of Lynda.com video tutorials I wanted to explore using the iPad. That company, among others switched their entire database to HTML5 compliant in advance of the iPad's release, and now I can see why.

No Suzanne, this is not a toy just for games, nor is it a bandwagon - it is the future of the internet and certainly one of the reasons why products like Kajabi and EVP are all HTML5 compliant now.

pffft ... disastrous for whos business growth? Not mine. I conduct my business from my desktop all day long. Don't need a tablet for any reason really, but I'll be purchasing a new laptop soon, but if I were to go with a tablet ... now that I own a Droid X, which runs my computer as far as Internet access goes, it would be an Android tablet ... hands down.

My thoughts exactly Suzanne - Apple is not the only player in the game, and especially now that Google (the 900 pound gorilla) has publicly stated that the next release of Android will be specifically optimized for tablets, Apple will not have a monopoly on the market anymore. I'd not be surprised at all to see people flocking to Android tablets in short order when they find out that they are not as restrictive and draconian as Apple is with its iPad. Don't forget that there are also other players entering the game soon - Microsoft is releasing a tablet optimized OS soon, and now that HP has bought Palm, they'll be releasing a webOS tablet early next year. Further complicating matters for Apple is Blackberry's new QNX OS that will run on their upcoming Playbook tablet.

Yeah ... the thing is that I have the rural location thing to deal with. I called AT&T 3 times and 3 times their sales reps told me I had great WiFi coverage here.

So I went to Best Buy and bought a cell phone booster ($350) and an AT&T Air Card. Nothing .. nada .. zilch.. zippo. I called AT&T again and finally ask for a supervisor and she said ... you have minimal coverage there. I don't recommend this for you. Fortunately, I was able to run back to Best Buy, return everything and cancel the 2 YR contract before I would have been charged early termination fees.

Then a friend comes over and goes down in the basement with a Droid phone, connects his laptop and is downloading music while talking on the Droid at the same time and browsing the Internet.

I couldn't believe it. So I went with Droid. Tethered it to my desktop and haven't had to use dialup since. With such spectacular success with a Droid, I'd stick with another Droid product if I buy a tablet ... I'm sure the Droid phone would also sync with the Droid tablet.

So, like I said ... I'm really glad I didn't run out and buy that iPad when I wanted to because it would be a coffee coaster here.

The key thing to remember is that iPads (and iPhones, Droids or whatever) generally aren't on the company network and aren't subject to the company IT police monitoring, firewalling and the like. That means you can view and post to your Facebook, Twitter, Gmail etc. while at work and you won't get any flack for viewing 'sports' websites during the work day.

I can't argue with that, but while you could get away with viewing sports websites and Youtube on your smartphone, an iPad is a lot harder to ignore or conceal, lol! It'd be harder to sneak into the restroom or stick into your jacket when you hear a superior coming your way..

The whole key takeaway here is that tablets (not necessarily just the iPad) are here to stay. I'd watch out for the big kid on the block, as Google has publicly stated that their next big release of Android (3.0, codenamed Honeycomb) will be fully optimized for tablets and this will definitely make them a commodity, as opposed to the high-end prices that Apple is currently trying to extort for its iPads.

You can already see some excellent and inexpensive Android tablets trickling in, and here's just an example of what's to come - http://www.archos.com/products/ta/ar...try=us&lang=en

The reason iPad users buy more than regular visitors is because of how streamlines and easy it is to buy from Apple. People already have Apple store credits so they do not feel like they are actually spending money. Kind of like how you bet with chips at a casino instead of cash.

The BB tablet is still a year off, and Android tablets have been around for a long time and mostly all suck.

By the time any serious competitor releases a tablet, Apple will already have released their next iteration of the iPad. Which does not necessarily mean it will be the best at that time.

You are dead wrong here, the Android tablets that sucked were mostly running versions 1.5 and 1.6, and were cheap knockoffs using resistive touch screens - these were nothing more than toys. The good ones are just now being released, including the Archos 101 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab (all of which run Android 2.2). Don't be so quick to make generalizations about things you know nothing about.

The BB tablet is coming early next year, so it's only a few months away. The HP slate is also coming around that timeframe.

Truth is, most of this stuff will be obsolete within five years of launch due to a new 'stunner' thrusting herself upon the tech hungry.

I'm viewing this thread on an iPad now as a matter of fact. Great device for consuming information on.

I'd say about 7% of my business comes from mobile purchases. I know this because there is an ever increasing number of people emailing me asking "how do I download this to my iPhone or blackberry or android phone". The number just keeps getting bigger.

By 2015 the number of online purchases from mobile devices will easily be 35%+.

    Cheers,
    Matt

Exactly, Matt. We should be looking at the bigger picture, and that would be the fact that people are increasingly browsing for information and purchasing items on mobile devices. Even Google has a mobile initiative, and from now onwards they're putting their primary focus on developing applications and everything else for the mobile space, and designating desktop development as a secondary focus.

Love it here, too. My buying trigger was the "instant on" nature of the iPad itself. No booting, shutting down...just instant access to web, email, ebooks and I can even dictate short articles using Dragon Naturally Speaking's app.

I jailbreaked my iPhone 3G so it'll work as a WiFi hotspot. Now I can surf anywhere in North America using my iPad via my iPhone's 3G internet. At no added cost.

Once you own one you won't want to use anything else. I think a few years from now devices like the iPad will be be as ubiquitous as laptops are today.

I have been developing for Apple MAC OSX, for some time now and I can tell you that the iPad is just getting started, in fact the updated ipad software interface is not even out of beta yet.

So, know this, ipad is going to be HUGE,

I have clients that are setting up at trade shows and collecting email and customer data using one interface that is irresistible.

I read wf more on my iPad than anything else. I bought my last couple of wsos from it, and the larger ones that required downloads I just remoted into my desktop to get them.

Next iPad update brings multi-tasking...pretty cool.

This debate will never end though, some people like PC's some like Mac's..no problem.

I personally like the way my ipads, iphone 4 and both macs stay synced automatically. I remember a post I made not that long ago about hating macs because of a wireless issue I was having..LOL!

    Do what you like...
