Profanity In Domain Names

What do you think about this?

I got a friend who wants to make a site,
and while the word he intends to use is
not necessarily PROFANE per se...

It's pretty vulgar in some contexts.

Think along the lines of George Carlin's
SEVEN DIRTY WORDS (you can never
say on T.V.)...

Or better yet, Stern's adapted version.

Thoughts?

P.S. Didn't Jason Moffatt use the EFF
WORD in one of his projects once?

I wonder how that turned out.

If it fits his intended audience, why not?

I'm assuming that the word in question is related to the content of his site?

If so and if it is a keyword that potential visitors/customers would query Google with then he'd be a fool NOT to use it if it's available. If on the other hand it isn't relevant and would risk offending his audience then he'd be insane to do it!

Adult sites have been doing this since the beginning of the web and it works for them.

Wouldn't offend me depending on the site. If it's a humor site, I'd probably love it. If it's a porn site, men would probably love it

That, or a derivative thereof... think "fmylife.com" whose tagline has the real word, but with ** in the middle. Pretty popular site, I believe.

    Thanks! Awesome answers.

I'll tell him it's a horrid idea. Then register it myself.

    JUST KIDDING

But it does give me an idea. Thanks again.

    Edit:

I've seen the term 'Internet Marketing' used in lots of domain names. I don't see where the conflict lies...

I'm sure several regulars on the Friday Night Chat are immediately thinking of the domain I registered a couple weeks ago...

It's the three worst words in the world.

    Dot-com.

I have no damn clue what to do with it, but I'll come up with something.

Wait, so you own the domain Dot-com.com? That's actually a pretty cool domain name. The only use I can think of for it is for a domain registrar company (which obviously you aren't, and you probably aren't able to start).

Nothing wrong with it. I'm not a big stickler of it, that's for sure. Hell, ****edcompany.com was HUGELY successful for the longest time before they were acquired. I used to read that for craps and giggles

only downfall i can think of is that profanity does not show up in google suggest. Now with google instant it could lead to less google traffic. Then again, if your friend is targeting keywords with the profanity, it would not really matter because they are probably going to type the word in regardless of google suggest. on the other had, you never said he is going to be relying on google traffic anyway.

Nope. No way. SEO ain't a fun time to me anyway.

We be saving that for exact keyword match domains 'round here.

You can always redirect the traffic with well-placed ads on a built-to-rank site.

We really think that it depends on the group your targeting to gain traffic from. Now if its something that your making as a brand for yourself then stick with it and let it roll from day one. Otherwise it may not be such a wise idea and could potentially destroy a really good site off of one tacky domain name. Just our opinion.

Some time ago I registered http://www.icantbelieveitsf**kingwordpress.com/ for a Wordpress theme Steve Fullman and I were developing. We thought it hilarious. Now I think it's just ridiculous. But there again...we might do something with it.

I think it's hilarious. I'd almost buy your theme just on principle because your domain name was funny; make it something I even halfway want, and I'm sold.

I'm not normal, however. I've hit the BIN button on eBay just because the description made me laugh.

There is no law against using profanity in domain names. However, you must ensure your target audience is fine with that and no one will feel offended by it.

Just to show you how old I am, I think it's pretty sad when people have to stoop to profanity to sell. But then, more and more garbage like this is making it to TV, too.

      Pete,

This has been going on for decades. I can remeber watching one of those old time family sitcoms where the mom says to the dad "Ward, you were a little hard on the Beaver last night", and the censors had no problem with it.

  • One thing you have to bear in mind is that a website with a profane domain name will be filtered by schools etc. who use Parental Control software. This of course will greatly reduce the flow of traffic to such a website.

But if your domain is full of profanity, chances are you don't have anything you can sell to kids anyway.

If you do it right, you can make yourself a pretty viral little site that advertises your other sites/portfolio.

    http://whatthe****ismysocialmediastrategy.com/
    and
    http://whatthe****shouldimakefordinner.com/

both get spread around like wildfire, and on the bottom they have a credit to the owners portfolio or site.
