You could sign up to an autoresponder service that lets you add an attachment to the email I think? I have seen quite a few people delivering products via autoresponder services like Aweber, so as long as you could attach files I guess you wouldn't need to upload.

There are a few shopping carts that actually host your files for you and deliver them to your customer. You simply embed your html code on your website. I've done a lot of research on different shopping carts. For one that hosts your files, I think Sell Downloads Online | Digital Content Center offers a pretty good deal!

It's unclear whether you are selling downloads, or giving them away. Each would have it's own "best practices".

If giving it away (most likely trading the file for an email sign-up) it's probably best to send people an email with a download link. Attachments could work IF it's a very small file, but many people are (and should be) very leery of mysterious email attachments. If you can't host files on your own website, there are many free file hosting services that trade space for showing advertisements.

If your delivering premium paid content, that's a whole new ballgame. The goal here is to secure and protect your downloads against copying, theft, and sharing. The best practice is to use a system that provides a unique download link for each customer, but you're going to have to pay something for this service.

@RJP - Actually I'm selling paid content and my problem here is finding a secure way to protect the downloads but not using the conventional ways
i.e. I'm looking forward for Software licensing etc........

I haven't implemented this yet, but I have bought tons of products that have been delivered via DLGuard.
