2 Months In, Heres My Stats

Hi

I started seriously with Internet Marketing roughly 2 months ago. I have since built a few websites and implemented a few different strategies where I build sites around popular keywords and try to rank well in Google (along with other traffic methods).

I am going to outline 2 of the 4 sites and would be really grateful if you could offer some advice showing me what to do from here. Perhaps you were in a similar position? I am really trying to drill down and find out what are the critical few things that separate unsuccessful warriors from the warriors who make regular sales from their sites.

Website 1
  • This website is in the learn to dance niche.
  • The site has blog posts built around 1 keyword that gets 3000 searches per month.
  • Currently it ranks 5th in Google UK, US & CA.
  • This month the site has had 105 Unique visitors with a bounce rate of 65%
  • The product i am promoting is on clickbank and the analytics are terrible. I have no clue what the click rate is on my links as the stats are so erratic even show over 100 clicks in one day then nothing so im not paying too much attention to them right now which is annoying, if i had to guess i would say roughly 35 clicks are genuine with no order form impressions.
  • The majority of my traffic is from Facebook, Google & Article Sites. Facebook I assume is just link sharing as the link is in quite a few relevant fan pages and groups. Google is organic searches and articles are mainly ezine articles I wrote around the subject.

Notes: I was a victim of the Googles Keyword Tool inaccuracies meaning the actual traffic showing now has almost halved so there are only around 1500 searches for the keyword now.

I have tested two clickbank products in the month, despite their analytics making no sense I don't thing there is a great deal of difference in the click rates.

Website 2
  • This website is based around a womans beauty product.
  • The site is built around one main keyword with 5 categories targeting sub keywords. The content consists of short reviews with amazon products for each review.
  • I have a free ebook given in exchange for an opt-in with an upsell option on the thankyou page selling a $10 ebook highly targeted to the product.
  • I have 26 subscribers in my list in 2 months.
  • The site has had 390 unique visitors in 2 months with a 65% bounce rate.
  • I have made 1 amazon sale.
  • I have tested an autoresponder series giving away lots of content then promoting a similar product which didnt work. (Too early?)
  • Again my traffic is mostly Facebook, Google, Ezine Articles (and a few forums) Facebook is just link sharing although I did test a Facebook PPC campaign briefly which does account for most of my subscribers and 40 visitors to my site.
  • I rank 4th on Google in US. 26th (page 3) in UK and 8th in Canada.

Notes:

Obviously promoting amazon products was a dumb move, as the commissions suck but hey! I was just starting out and eager to take action. That 1 sale although only $2.80 made me happy and made me more determined to continue.

I dont think I can change what I promote as the site is based around a very specific product. That is why I tried to diversify with the free ebook, the paid ebook and the mailing list. I think I might have to scrap the amazon stuff and gear the whole site towards the ebook and concentrate on building a list? I dont know what would you do?

Many thanks!
Tim

Give it some time. List building should definitely be priority one. You can sell to your list every week, whereas the website will try the sale only once if you do not capture their email address.

Amazon and Adsense commissions are usually very low.

My sites and articles now focus exclusively on list building.

Thank you ( I would have pushed the thanks button but I am all out)

I found your figures quite encouraging. My suggestion is not to move on to another product tweak the 2 sites as much as possible. Add new content target other keywords etc.

You have alot of work put in and have learned a great deal so carry on with those two sites until you have squeezed the life out of them.

You may be discouraged looking out, for me looking in you have done a huge amount and with perseverance will be fine.

Look around on the forums, there are plenty people making as much as 10K on amazon. I'm setting up a new Amazon reviews site as we speak! It would seem your initial research may have been low...

Hopefully you can do some SEO work and get higher up on the page. #1 would increase your traffic nicely...

The traffic sounds pretty low on both sites. In the first site you have 105 visitors but 100 clicks in a day? Is there a stray zero there somewhere?

It has only been 2 months, but what i suggest is (if you're using blogs) pump out regular content. As much as you can! This will help massively with the organic search traffic and your site wont get stale.

Basically your marketing sounds good, just keep going on the content and the link building! Build momentum!

    TJM,

It looks like you're in a good position for future growth.
It also looks like you may have fallen for the "set it and forget it" hype telling us we should be making $100K in 3 weeks.

Just like the space shuttle, you need massive force just to get off the ground, but once you do you just need a little push here and there.

Its been 2 months... No one knows you even exist yet. YET.

Thanks for all of the advice and encouragement, it really does help a lot knowing that I'm heading in the right direction.

Patchworks, I have seen other people making a killing with Amazon and I agree with you it could be very powerful. However because of my calculations initially I think I do need to move away from Amazon on this site. I have learnt from this and would definitely try amazon again in the future with more traffic volume and higher priced products I have every reason to believe I could make that work.

The products i promote on this site are between $5 - $60 meaning the commissions are very low. As my initial traffic estimate was incorrect I don't think I will ever have the volume to make a decent amount from amazon even with number 1 position on Google.

From what everyone has said I will do the following in the next 2 months:

    1. Add regular content to grow the sites and increase organic traffic.
    2. Move away from amazon and make list building my primary focus.
    3. Increase Google positions even more.
    4. Pay more attention to Forum and Article marketing.

I will post another report after 1 or 2 months with the results.

    Thanks!
