Which are the best social networking sites for driving traffic to one's website?

Everybody agrees that social networking sites are invaluable tools for promoting an online business and increasing the number of visitors to one's website. The widest used social networks today are Facebook and Twitter. But there are several other social networks which can be useful for driving traffic to one's website.

Therefore my question is:
Which are the best social networking sites for driving traffic to one's website?
I would greatly appreciate feedback based on your personal experience

It all depends on what your website is offering because it will make no sense to promote a music website on a social networking sites that focuses more on home-based business. So there is no one best social networkin sites. Just choose the ones that best suits your business and learn how to use it effectively.

I agree with what you said. However there are large social networks that are good for most niches: Facebook, Twitter etc. I would be grateful to hear about some personal experiences about which social networks have brought the largest amount of traffic to a specific website.

go to ping fm and register to the whole list... then do your updates through it, and interact personally in twitter and facebook.

IMHO, it doesn't matter which networks you use... what matters is how you use them...

Use social networks to be SOCIAL, not "salesy"....

Use them to make connections with other people in your niche...

Make sure you have a full, clickable link in your profile on facebook and in your "info" section on facebook taking people to a squeeze page giving away a freebie, to help listbuilding...

Make sure you're Twitter page also has that link, and that you post interesting tweets, not salesy spammy rubbish ones

Get that link in your youtube videos, and in your youtube account.

      And have fun :-)

      • First of all, the number one rule of driving traffic to your site through social media networks is to PARTICIPATE. These sites reward participation. You can't expect to promote yourself without participating in the community. In all honesty, they are all good.

BUT, from personal experience, StumbleUpon is by far the best to drive traffic if you are first starting. When I first launched my internet based company, I got 70 unique visitors come from StumbleUpon alone on the first day that my site was published. StumbleUpon is a website voting social network. The more people vote on your site, then the more it is spread around. Regardless, if people vote for you or not, your site will be put in front of some of the 11 million people that are part of the community. Hope this helps, PM me if you have any questions. Kevin S.

Thank you for your detailed answer, it's been really helpful. I'll take your advice and open an account with StumbleUpon and see what happens ... Personally I'm familiar with facebook and twitter, but now the time is right for me to get to know additional social networks.

Twitter and Youtube are both good for generating traffic, but are notorious for their low conversion rates. Facebook is probably the best source of social media traffic that converts decently.

lol no I wont be posting a link to my site, but I can say this, if your starting a fan page go to twitter and order a package and have someone send out invites to their 15000 fan page members or whatever the figure is. Now these won't be targeted by any means but if you are auto posting your feed to your fan page all of your entries will end up on every one of there walls for all their friends to see.

    Math
Receive 600 fans from your order each with 125 friends.

    600 x 125 = 75000

Thats potentially 75000 people seeing your post everyday, some targeted visitors have to come out of that.

It really depends on how you'll be using them. Determine which crowd best suits your needs. Twitter and Facebook have a really big market and definitely you'd be able to get good traffic from there. Just make sure you're doing the right promotion or marketing.

That's one of those all encompassing questions where there is no better/best solution.
Having said that, I agree with MaxHunt - Twitter and Youtube low converting - Facebook is OK
