Don't Be Fooled! - The Real TRUTH About Making a Full Time Income Online

  • People often like to talk about their success more than they like to talk about their failures.

  • People often like to talk about the fun times than the hard times.

  • People tend to prefer to hear about success and fun times, than failure and hard times.

  • People like easy solutions that require as little effort as possible.

Couple this with the fact that almost all marketers in the self help and business advice markets are well aware of all this.

They know that showboating success, fun times and easy solutions drives more sales of their products.

One author of a very popular book about online entrepreneurship was asked to change the original title of his book that he wanted because the publisher did not think it was catchy enough. He did a thorough test to see what potential titles of the book people liked, it was the one that signified little work but big returns.

Honest marketers, if they want to make significant sales, are encouraged by their audiences desire to focus heavily on the positives and best potential results. They will of course lay down the truth and describe that work must be done, but people hear what they want to hear.

Then there are the slimeball marketers promising immediate wealth from a push button system anyone can use.

It is no surprise that many become engrossed in the myth that there are quick and easy solutions for making a profitable online business.

While common sense would tell you otherwise, it doesn't change the fact that most of the 98% of people failing are clinging to the belief that the easy solution is just round the corner, in the next opportunity.

An online business can be a lot easier and grossly more profitable than the alternatives, but that doesn't take away the need for real hard work, doing that work for many months, if not years, and having to do some work that you won't like.

No job is all fun, otherwise it wouldn't be called a job, it would be called a hobby. I love my job on the whole, but it took a huge amount of long hours and crappy work to get here.

(this is just my 2 cents, let me know what you think)

Excellent post, Chris. All the crazy push-button automatic moneymaking products would not be flooding the market if they weren't in demand at this present time. The plain truth is that controversy and excitement sells, and no one is going to get excited about any IM product that starts off by talking about how you have to spend endless hours getting your salesletter, product creation, backlinking, split testing, etc. just right in order to rake in thousands of dollars!

I have noticed a similar phenomenon in mainstream magazines - the short headlines on the covers are unbelievably irresistible, and almost compel you to flick to the page where the article is and read it. Oftentimes the article itself is a complete letdown, but this is the same principle at work here when pushing IM products these days. The aim of many products these days is to shock, dazzle and impress the viewer so that they bite and buy the product. While the refund rate may be higher, you also have to consider that the conversion rate is also probably higher due to the "shock and awe" effect of these sales pages.

Thanks for all the 'thanks' everybody.

@paulie - It's very true, as a marketer it is hard not to be seduced into giving a lot of buzz, and those with lower ethics will certainly go that route. I've chatted with successful IM product promoters that actually deliver good products, but there sales pages are extreme over-exaggerated buzz, and in many cases actually outright lies.

Truth is very few customers actually question it, and when they do such questions are ignored or carefully brushed over.

The excuse for doing this is just 'its marketing' or 'my audience only buys on hype'. In their own mind they are doing nothing wrong, especially if their product is good.

Still its just not a good way to build trust and loyalty with your audience and does a lot more damage in the long run. So even if you have poor ethics then just from a business point of view its the wrong thing to do.

That's why we need to step the hell up and be a cut above the rest.

There are all the "automatic" blogging and money making systems out there... But do they really deliver?

If you've been in IM for any length of time, you know that it's a 100% BS sales tactic.

    Of course there is work.

You still need to click a few buttons and get it to work.

But as Chris has said, you need to build credibility and deliver on what you promise.

Don't be fooled by "good looking" clickbank sales pages and think you can't compete.

There are a few well known marketers here who have some pretty ugly sales pages, but they still make thousands upon thousands all the time just based on their reputations alone.

It won't be as quick as many people think it is. Maybe they'll take the red pill and wake up to the truth some day...

...Or maybe they'll keep sleeping hoping to stumble upon the magic pill.

    Whatever works

It's like anything else. You just have to grind and put in work and you can succeed. I have been doing this full time since February and I only started three months earlier. It's about putting in the hours and paying attention. And not spending tons of money on product after product. Also, it helps to get in on a launch BEFOREHAND.

I think there are basically two types of internet marketers:

    a) The ones that are just after the easy money
    b) The ones that build products for those looking for the easy money.
    b) The ones that are serious and honest and want to not only make money but provide valuable products.

The first ones are, I think, the big majority and also the ones that are building a bad reputation for IM. Those are the ones that fill the Internet with crappy sites and all kind of spam. But they are also the ones than make other people make money because they are the ones that are always ready to buy, specially highly hyped products that promise what all we know is not possible.

The second ones are those that make products for the people of the first group. They create crappy products that promise a lot but do not offer anything. They are the kings of the hype and the lack of value. Among them there are people that has made a lot of money.

The third ones can be called "honest business people". They want to make money, of course, but they want to make it in a honest way. They create good and useful products or services that provide value and help people. Some of them are still a little hype but they do offer quality products or services.

    Which one do belong?

Yes, totally agree. First year is hard. Actually getting started is hard because we only look for fast solutions that are short term. It took me quite a while to realize that I need to just spend some time researching and then to do something that works long term, and eventually pays off more.

People also crave authenticity. While marketers are aware of these things, what they're generally ignoring is that the average consumer is not aware of why he distrusts the "pie in the sky" marketer... but he does distrust that marketer, all the same.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

The obvious lesson there is, don't sound too good to be true.

And sometimes that means you have to leave out some of the features and benefits of your product in the sales letter, because they would make it sound way too good.

    I'd add to that:

I disagree... It's not a myth. It's really quick and easy. As I look back when
I first started and all my struggles were really SELF INFLICTED.

Making money on the internet is quick (Instant payments) and easy (Good sales pitch).

I find most "Internet Marketers" struggle because they approach it like
an employee and think the amount of "Time" they work translates to
    a how productive they are.

Find a market ---> Opt in ----> Sales page ----> Google Adwords

Literally it's that simple. You can start making money in a single day.

Most newcomers complicate it because of the internal belief system
that "It can't be that easy". Well yea it is...

I agree to some extent. We make it much harder than it should be.

It is really hard when you're trying to do it without any money to start.

Once you have relationships with people who can generate traffic, a list of your own, or money for advertising, it can be really easy.

Conversions and Traffic. Offer something people want and get the people who want it to see your offer. Whether they buy or not, get them on your list, offer good content and make additional offers.

That doesn't have to take 80 hours a week to accomplish.

I'd agree it is easy when you compare it to many other jobs.

Still you need to develop the know how and have the experience. Just like driving a car is easy once you know how, but it takes a few months of lessons to figure it out and learn the ways of the road (at least in the UK it does, U.S is a little different).

There's also a case of building momentum, the first $100/mo is a lot harder than the next.

A big chunk of the difficulty does come from within, having the right mindset is crucial, that's where most of my early screw-ups came from.

With the right mindset, the experience and knowledge you can start building a full time income in a few weeks/months, but people don't start out with all that. They have to develop the right mindset, learn the large variety of skills needed, get hands-on experience and put all that into action and build momentum - that's going to take about 2 years for the average committed person (some more, some less).

Yes it is quick compared to the average career, it pays more, and if you run your business well it is a lot easier, but it does require a lot of work and commitment up front.

Well said making a full time income on the Internet is not for the lazy or the faint of heart. It is like a rough roller coaster ride with all its ups and downs. What you are striving for is to have a lot more ups than downs.

It is a business treat it as a business and not as a hobby if you want to make a full time income one day.

Well very much agreed on. But still you can love your job so much that you could call the job a hobby! Of course there is probably always some things not to like, these we can outsource depending on what we can and want to spent for that of course.

The question remains should you give the interested what they asked for or not? If they ask for hype? Does it matter or what counts most honesty and making less money or a little hype and more money.

I think you should be honest. And I think you should sell. Now is the question how:confused:

My views over the last 12 months have changed somewhat, my view is if they wont buy the medicine that will help them, then I have no problem selling them the placebo they think will be better for them because it tastes nicer.

I will do my utmost to channel people into the light, but for those that insist on taking the darker route i plan on having a place for them to go too.

You can sell them work...Or you can sell them a lottery ticket

At least you are honest! In my own experience it is exceptionally hard to persuade people to approach an online business in the right way, and it does not take long before they are seduced by some other tactic, give up or obsess endlessly over something not important.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to channel people in the right direction, but it is very difficult when the competition to sensible business thinking are using the best persuasion and psychology tricks in the business to get them to do otherwise.

If the economy continues to weaken expect to see a lot more of this as people look for people to blame and vent their anger.

Such people need to be punished, but during good times they get away with it as nobody is that interested, but when times turn bad people are much more aggressive at getting the scammers and rich *******s that are earning off their misfortune.

I recently posted the following on my blog:
      • Hatred for scammers and unethical internet marketers will increase both as a result, and also due to the need to find an enemy and assign blame that accompanies a downturn. A general distrust against internet marketers as a whole will grow considerably and the industry will be largely tarnished leaving the ethical members of the internet industry tarred with the same brush.
      • A boom in spam and scammers and a growth of hatred towards internet marketers will drive more rules and legislation on the internet business community.
      • A growth in communities (such as The Salty Droid) that name and shame online scammers and serve to protect people online will grow in terms of followers and aggression.
      • Record fines and punishments against online scammers and spammers will be delivered. While scammers and spammers have had somewhat of an easy ride during the boom times, they will eventually become a hated target if stocks drop far enough
