Paypal Protection Policy Changes

Notice Received from Paypal 1st Oct:

In response to customer feedback one notable change is the improvements to our Buyer Protection Policy. From 2nd November, customers who pay you with PayPal will be protected if they receive a product that does not significantly match its online description. This will help to ensure that buyers feel even safer when they shop with PayPal on your site. For more information on our Buyer Protection Policy and how it effects sellers
Whilst i can appreciate the need to offer proper protection to buyers, it's interesting that they try to put a spin ( "...buyers feel even safer when they shop with PayPal on your site. " ) on the announcement to make it look as though they are doing me a favor.

Of course, the product delivered should match the online description and I don't dispute that. It does look as though extra care needs to be taken to avoid misrepresentation.

Probably most merchants are already offering 30-60 day guarantees with no questions asked. I wonder how many buyers will argue this policy as a means of extending normal guarantees?

Paypal has been in the business of enabling thieves for least the last decade.

They are not the sellers friend.

Well I think you should probably refund the buyer even if your "guarantee period" has expired. It is just good business. You are always going to have some people take advantage of you, tis the nature of the beast. - Mark

I don't think this is about bonafide refunds.

I think what's at issue here is that sellers of tangible items have seen an dramatic increase in the number of bogus sales they make. Especially for electronics.
say you sell someone a laptop. The buyer takes delivery, claims that what was in the box wasn't what they ordered. Packs up a an old or broken laptop and ships it back to the seller.
Now the seller is out both the product and the money. And Paypal no longer wishes to deal with the rising tide of seller belligerence in the matter.

    Just MHO.

This change does not bother me - in-fact I think it is another good step in the right direction.

There are a lot of dodgy sellers out there that give the rest of us a bad name. Hopefully those who have been sitting on the fence not knowing whether they can trust a seller or not will now be willing to take the plunge (and hopefully be plesantly surprised by the service and product they receive for their hard earned $$).

    Just my 2 cents.

I can see this could be abused - but I think it may be meant to be aimed at ebay sellers.

There are some really scammy people selling some things these days. They seem to focus on the high selling products and a lot of cheap import fakes meant to resemble the real thing are being sold there.

I don't get it; why are you the only one who received this?

Is it a new PayPal policy or is it just concerning your account?

PayPal is making some big changes in the next few months and none of them are for the sellers benefit.

I have heard from an extremely reliable source that very soon refunding customers through PayPal will cost you a fee and PayPal will STILL keep the % they made off of your transaction.

Best decision I have made with my business this year was stop making them my primary method of accepting orders online. I still offer PayPal as an option but the only ones who use it are the ones paying with PayPal... not by credit card.

WHAT! I have not paid a single fee for a refund as of yet... not to mention paypal never officially notifying me of this.

Glad I am only giving about 30% of my business to them now

They sent out an email a couple of weeks before. I had to call them to clarify things before it went into effect.

            Thanks,

            John

Paypal annoys me so much. They make it too easy for people to rip sellers off.

Yes I can understand the refund thing with so many gurus suggesting if you are not getting a lot of refunds you are not pushing your market hard enough.

Just more ways for bad customers to rip people off with Paypals protection. They don't ever seem to respond to feedback by providing ripoff protection to sellers ... now, do they?
