Cost of domain registration

Hey! I was just about to buy the "Baby package" from Hostgator since I am going to be putting up many sites. What I am wondering is if it costs extra every time you want to register a new web site even if you have a monthly subscription at Hostgator? Cause I was just about to finish my purchase when it said my domain registration costs an additional 15 bucks, but it says "Unlimited Domains" in the description.

What they mean with "unlimited domains" is that you can have as many domains (and websites for those domains) as you like in your web hosting package. They won't limit you to only having one website.

You will still need to purchase the domain names that you wish to add to your hosting package. Generally a new domain name will cost around $10-11 each (for .com) at the moment

Okay, thank you for the quick answer. Another person told me that it didn't cost anything extra when you registered a new domain if you had a subscription that included "Unlimited Domains" so that kind of got me confused. Thank you for clearing that up, that's what I thought in the first place.

      Just like to add something.
Don't purchase your domain names from the same provider you
      get hosting.

      This is a big mistake.

You could purchase hosting from Hostgator and your domains
from Goddady or namecheap for example.

This is an excellent point and well worth remembering. Should anything happen to your hosting, you never ever want your domain names to be held hostage. It is much easier to restore a website than it is to recover a domain name.

Namecheap are excellent, if you buy any domains from them they run a coupon code every month which will save you a little extra money on new registrations.

You can certainly get domains cheaper than 15/yr if you know where to look. Hosting unlimited domains doesn't necessarily have to be that expensive either. I do separate into multiple hosting plans as I tend to think there is benefit in separate IP's (my own opinion), don't know what the big fuss would be to have domains/hosting in same account, as long as it's cost effective. I host myself/others, but depending on if my domains are cheaper through my reseller plan (Business Solutions made simple!) or if I happen across a killer code for G0d@ddy/elsewhere, I'll pop a domain or two at another registrar. Gotta keep the accounts under control though LoL.

    Register your domains at NameCheap.

And get a Reseller type account, not a single-login account. That way, every domain will have its own login. You might think that's a hassle, until someone hacks into one, or you decide to sell one.

If a hacker gets into your account, they can access EVERYTHING in that account. If you've got 25 sites set up as addon domains, you're sunk. With a Reseller account, if they hack in, it's only one account that gets trashed.

Also, if you ever decide to sell any sites, then a reseller account takes about 30 seconds to transfer. If it's an addon domain, it'll probably cost you something to have someone do the transfer, and you're exposed while they've got your login.
