Is this a hosting problem?

I signed up with a new host 3 months ago. It's a very reputable company and I've been happy with their service except for one recurring problem:

In just 3 months my email has been tagged as spam and blocked at least 4 times. It affects not just a single email but all of it. Here's part of the message I get:

(reason: 553 Mail from 206.217.196.228 not allowed - 5.7.1 [BL22] Connections not accepted from IP addresses on Spamhaus SBL; see 550 5.7.1 [BL22] Connections not accepted from IP addresses on Spamhaus SBL | Yahoo! Postmaster Help [550])

In 4 years with three other hosts this never happened once. So I'm assuming the problem is with the new host.

They fix the problem every time but once it took about two days. I'm not happy with this at all.

Can anyone explain what may be causing this and what I can do about it? Thanks!

David, are you using built in mail for your autoresponder?

I don't have too much techy experience but I know that sending emails from your address is very risky. You'd be much better off with a paid service such as aWeber.

It's got a $1 month trial on at the moment so I suggest you atleast give it a shot.

Looks like Yahoo has tagged you as a spammer.

This is why we use paid services as they handle all this stuff. Not your hosts fault as such but it is related to your IP address so if it is shared then that is where the problem is.

This has nothing to do with email marketing or autoresponders, just everyday email correspondence. I do use ejunkie, which works through an autoresponder, but the spam blocking affects all my outgoing email.

I don't think the problem could be ejunkie because they're using their own server. It's my server that's getting tagged. My host's support replied with "The ip range has happened to got listed in the Spamhaus SBL"

So it just "happened"? Is it possible that other people sharing my server (I'm using VPS) are spamming?

And the most important question: Is this something I should be on the case about with my host? It seems that way to me!

      Thanks for any suggestions.

I think a few people have missed this part...

To me, David, it looks like anyone who uses Spamhaus as their filter is going to block your emails. It sounds like at some point, Spamhaus has registered your IP range as one which has been responsible for a lot of spam complaints.

        Couple of suggestions:

        - If your host can give you a different dedicated IP it might solve the issue
        - Use gmail as your SMTP(i.e. receive on your usual POP3 and send via gmail - you can do this in your outlook/thunderbird account settings)

I've never dealt with Spamhaus, but, it might be possible to have your domain removed from their list and disassociated from the IP range they're flagging - I don't know.

        Kindest regards,
        Karl.

Thanks, Karl. You got it absolutely right. This is happening with just regular email from Outlook Express.

And yes, it's my server being blocked. My host always corrects the problem but it's a nuisance and shouldn't happen in the first place.

What you're describing is a bit ambiguous.

If it's email being sent from a script on your web host, then that's one thing.

If it's your personal mail being sent from your desktop, like Outlook Express or Thunderbird, that's another.

If it's mail being sent from a hosted service like Yahoo or GMail, that's something else entirely.

Without clarifying the source of the email that's getting blocked, it's anybody's guess.

The IP you cited is identified thusly:

IP Location: United States Providence Hosting Services Inc
    Resolve Host: webserver.control-your-blood-pressure.com
    IP Address: 206.217.196.228
Reverse IP: 1 website uses this address. (example: control-your-blood-pressure.com)

That may or may not be your site or domain. But it's the IP that's being blocked.

If i was you i would try and start using getresponse or some other form of responder.

I kind of had this problem with one of my Gmail accounts. At first it didnt seem to be too much of a problem, but then it started affecting all my mail and i wasnt actually able to send any emails. Not even to people in my address book... Seems they classed my email address as a spammer account or something and in the end i had to disable it and start again. As frustrating as that is...

    Hope you get it sorted

it sort of dosent make sense what you are saying David.

When you send out email are you using a desktop program like outlook express or some
    program like that?
