Automated or Manual Backlinks?

I'm looking to hire somebody or a reputable company to create backlinks for my site.

I've noticed that many services on the internet provide either manual creation or automatic creation of backlinks. The difference between the two is not so much in the price, but in the number of backlinks they create.

For example, with automated creation of backlinks you get a few thousands backlinks, but with manual creation you get a few hundred and the price between the two is more or less the same. Why is that so? Why a few thousands automated backlinks are worth the same as a few hundred manual backlinks?
Why companies that create backlinks offer two packages, manual and automated backlinks? Can't they automate the manual creation of backlinks too and at the same time claim that it's done manually??

I mean, what's the difference between using automated software to create backlinks or manually creating them? What do you suggest is better? Can you list some of the services that you used to create backlinks?

Yeah I know, a lot of questions... I'm new to this internet world. I'd greatly appreciate your answers and explanations. Thanks

    Perhaps the difference is in the quality of the backlinks. Manual ones may be fewer but may be higher ranking links. I would rather have fewer higher ranking backlinks as opposed to thousands or crappy ranks. Find out if there is a backlink quality difference between manual and automated.

    I too would "prefer" to have higher quality links rather than tonnes from article directory's and so on. The fact is if I didn't have to choose, which I don't - I would want both.

    The only limiting factor is you or perhaps in this case, what you know (as you are looking to outsource). You can't simply go after high pr, do follow backlinks as that is so blatantly obvious to Google.

    Mix it up a bit but make sure you don't just get spammy links as they are worthless.
