    Define "Real website".

Everything you need to know about wordpress themes and coding can be found in the WordPress Codex.

Alternatively, you should find a theme which mirrors what you want to achieve, and study the CSS and PHP files.

There are hundreds of websites dedicated to custom WP theming. If you have specific WP questions, there are also many WP experts here who could most likely help you.

    Hope this helps.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

No offence intended - but it's not too difficult to understand that "real website"
doesn't mean sales-page when the OP writes:

To my understanding, it sounds like the OP wants to be able to build multi-page sites with WordPress. To remove the tell-tale signs that the site is running on the WP platform, in order to use it as a CMS. Which in itself isn't too difficult at all if you have some PHP/CSS/HTML knowledge.

    Kindest regards,
    Karl.

      Agreed.

The OP's meaning matches my own instinctive understanding of a "real website": one that doesn't immediately look "bloggy" with separate posts with the date on, an obvious bloggy sidebar or two and a little bit at the bottom saying "proudly powered by Wordpress", designed by "Wordpress-Solutions-4U" and these things like "comments closed" all over the place, which are a dead giveaway. All the crap one would want to remove to make it look like a proper website, in other words! What's difficult to understand about this?

The closed mindset of some who try to make money online never ceases to amaze me. There is a whole world out there of opportunities - selling an ebook online isn't the be-all and end-all of marketing.

I suppose it comes with experience - we all had to go through this.

I'd advise anyone to get out there in the real world and look for more opportunities that you can transpose your WF knowledge onto. You know more than you think, people. And you can earn thousands from your knowledge if you go looking for outlets for it.

There are two really basic ways to go about it, and neither involve widgets or plugins.

First, you can start with a Wordpress theme and remove the 'bloggy' bits from the various templates. This usually means either deleting or commenting out certain lines in the theme.

The best way to learn this is to open a browser with the Codex in it, and another with your site. I like to open a pair of tabs, one with the control panel and one with the site itself. Use a 'laboratory site' you don't care about, because the only reason it exists is to try stuff. If you do 'break it', just delete the theme and start over from scratch.

Say you want to start with removing the calendar. Look in the docs for the code that controls the calendar display. Switch browsers, edit the template, then check the result. If it's what you want, move on. If not, try again.

Second, you can find a website template that you like and add the 'bloggy bits' that turn it into a Wordpress theme. You can find a neat tutorial on doing so at Warrior Istvan Horvath's site. ( HTML Template into WordPress | Istvan Horvath - Blog )

The secret to designing a blog to look like a regular website is using a theme that is highly customizable.

Also, you want a theme that is easily customizable.

I use the Headway Theme and it has both of these features.

It is extremely customizable and it is easy to customize.

So, you can virtually drag and drop elements and change things with the click of a mouse.

So, you can virtually take a blog and make it look like any type of website you want. I use it for squeeze pages, sales pages, regular websites, clients websites, The list goes on and on.

So, if you are looking to build websites using WordPress I would highly suggest getting the Headway Theme.

The simplest solution is to pick a widget ready wordpress theme and remove all widgets except for the "Pages" widget. That allows you to create a site with a navigational structure that resembles what I believe you mean by a "real" web site.

    Hi nakatomi,

Try selecting Pages instead of Posts in your left hand menu of the WP Admin area when adding new web page content.

To set your home page, select "Reading" under Settings, and then select the "From Static Page" option, & select the name of the page you want to set as your home page from the drop down list entitled "Front Page". Save Changes.

To remove the blog roll & other things, you can usually do that by removing the corresponding widgets by selecting "Appearance" & Widgets in the WP-Admin menu.

If those are all blank because it's a new theme, you can remove those defaults by dragging a blank Text widget into each area (ie - north_sidebar, south_sidebar, etc). & save changes.

Now click on "Permalinks" under "Settings" & select "Custom Structure". In the text field below, add this: /%postname%/ and then save the changes.

That will make your URLs look SE Friendly and more natural looking.

This is just a quick rundown, but hopefully it will get you pointed into the right direction.

You can also use Artisteer to edit a Wordpress theme. It's much easier to do it that way. I recently finished creating my website and it looks great!!

The home page doesn't even look like a Wordpress site.
