What is the average email open rate?

15% is the average, I believe. I have heard that from a couple of people in the last week (I think James Schramko was one of them), though I'm sure that was a general stat and not for their specific lists. If you get 30-35%, you are doing very well. Obviously, there are a lot of variables involved. It may be higher in certain niches than others, and obviously your rapport with your list and how compelling the subject is.

47.3% on yesterdays broadcast must be pretty good then?

18% of the opens opted to purchase.

I'm NOT in the IM niche and I kill my subscribers with
kindness and generosity (well that's what all the books
told me to do...so I did)

The list was a targetted segment of around 4000 subscribers.

I don't know anything about other folks averages....don't
worry about other folks results...just focus on doing the right thing,
giving great value and being consistent!

No, he made about roughly half those sales. It would be 4000 x 0.473 x 0.18

It has to do with a lot of factors. What niche, like RanD said, also your list and its source and age, your subject line, the nature of the email, etc. I think 15% if you can hit it consistently is not horrible. It can certainly be improved though.

For my main list I usually get a 98% open rate, mainly because people are genuinely interested in what Im offering and I don't have to dumb anything down for a general audience.

It always varies though.

You either have a very small list or I'm calling BS on this one. Sometimes you can't even get a 98% *delivery* rate, so claiming a 98% *open* rate would be something very special or BS

I disagree with you. I have a list that got a 104% open rate, based on everyone who received it.... yes there are a few bounces, but other than that EVERYONE who got the email opened it, a couple people opened it twice.

It just depends on the niche.

This particular list was local people interested in receiving coupons through email. People who shop, and want to save money when they shop, gladly open an email that will help them save.

Yes,

It really depends.

At the moment, with some lists I am using, I am getting about a 20% open rate. Other lists I believe I have had close to a 100% open rate.

I believe it depends how tight your offer/content is to how targeted your userbase is.
