Wish Me Luck - First Timer

Hello everyone,

This is my first post, I have been lurking for a few days. I work a 9-5 like many of you (Actually more like a 7-5:30) and I also own an online business where I do fairly well ($50k+ gross) working only a few hours a day. I sell primarily on eBay and Amazon but have a website which consequently lead me to internet marketing. I was researching SEO Techniques to increase traffic and sales on my website when I stumbled on internet marking.

So, with that being said I have feverishly researched internet marketing for the past week and half or so. I did proper keyword research, (via Moneywork Matrix System) found an affiliate product that I can offer, I pulled the trigger last night and purchased the domain and uploaded wordpress. I am in the process of producing content (Most likely will outsource due to my already very demanding schedule) and have a Backlinking strategy that I plan to use once the site has content. I am planning on spending one hour a day Mon - Fri on this niche site, and a few hours on Saturday and Sunday.

I do however have one question that I hope that you veterans can help me with. I am torn between offering the affiliate link right on the page and hoping to get the traffic on and off my page as quickly as I can, or using a plugin like popup domination (with a free mini course) and obtaining a list and sending the affiliate offer to the list at a later date.

I am planning on marketing to Pregnant Women (If that helps)

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks and wish me luck all!

People always tell you this: the money's in the list. It seems to be true.

Think how much you can help pregnant women. They'll likely stay on your list for a couple of months to nine months (or even longer) if you offer them advice, tips, affiliate offers about pregnancy, ebooks about mothering, affiliate links to great deals on baby furniture...

      Send the link later!

Use your site for listbuilding. This way you can direct traffic back to your main site and offer things on a regular basis to your new regular customers.

Great job with the ebay/amazon biz.

I wouldn't normally throw this at anyone - but 50k a year selling with those is nothing to sneeze at. I'd be willing to sign up to a report on how you set up and grew that business.

I might even be willing to ante up a dollar or two for such a report.

    Go for the list!

You'll be able to maintain a relationship with your readers and use your list to launch other websites in the future. If you treat your subscribers well (that means no hassling or blatant selling) they'll start to genuinely trust you and take your words as gospel!

There is no sense in letting your visitors float away into thin air without at least capturing their contact info...

I don't know if you're actually aware of it, but a rather high percentage of pregnant women will actually become mothers! So you could use your list to branch off to another demographic or even launch your own discussion board for mothers and start raking in the dough!

I think building the list would be a good idea. Then you can build an audience and market the current affiliate product as well as future ones. Just be sure to provide good, interesting information in your emails, and avoid make every email a sales pitch.

      Good luck!

If I were in this niche, I would do free birth announcements on some website or other, and the sign-up form would be an opt-in to a "new mothers" list. So what happens is, new mother comes to your page, fills in the "my baby was just born!" form... and gets on your list. You can pack that list with an affiliate product a week for several years worth of time.

Send an affiliate pitch on Monday, a parenting tip on Wednesday, and a tip on keeping your own life, relationship, and sanity together on Friday. Then two thirds of your list content is valuable, non-pitch content... so people will tend to stay on your list for the Wednesday and Friday emails, and keep seeing the Monday emails.

Choose and pitch your affiliate products wisely for this, and your open rates will stay high throughout, even though the pattern of "Monday = pitch" will not elude anyone.

It is always a good idea to build your list first. Even if the person doesn't purchase this product, you can still sell her other products. Also, reportedly, it takes people a little while to get to know you before they want to buy. In sending them a regular email that is targeted to their needs and contains lots of good information, you will build trust and they will be more likely to buy from you.

Offer a free report or an email course on a subject that is of interest to pregnant women (hint: babies, pregnancy or labor) to get the signup, then treat that list like gold.

    Good luck.

Getting traffic and conversions is usually a lot harder than just uploading Wordpress, making a few posts and crossing your fingers.

Make sure you build lots of backlinks, and paid traffic for affiliate offers can work well too.

I developed a new (FREE) PPC/SEO tracking system, go to lambdatracker.com to and enter your email and you will be sent the download link and install instructions .... Also increase your revenue with my Geotargeting script.

I realize that. I never said that I was putting up a wordpress site and "crossing my fingers" If you'll read my post I said I was going to outsource content and articles, and I also said that I had a backlink strategy.

Thanks everyone for your help, it's apparent that the list building is the way to go. Does anyone have any thoughts on popup domination as opposed to an opt in box on the page?

Yup.. I would only sell my autoresponder. A customer that comes to your page and leave right away to buy the product.. may never come back, and you won't have a chance to cross promote baby products 9 months later...

While with a list..you can promote them as long as you want.

Always always always capture the lead. On average it takes 7 "touches" or contacts with each lead before they buy. Hoping that they'll buy on the first visit is lofty...not impossible, but lofty.

Awesome action by the way! Dig right in.

Definitely go for the list. Imagine if you starting branching out a bit with a few reports and what not that you are either selling or just giving away for free, you will have an already established reputation with your list. That means they are more likely to buy and/ or view your report.

There's nothing stopping you from doing both.

Use diffeent parts of the page for different purposes as
some will repond to one thing while others will repsond
    to something else.

It's not an "all or nothing" issue.

      Thanks for the insight.

My thought behind the "one or the other" approach was in regards to gaining the trust of the people that were coming to my site. Does anyone have any foresee-able problems with trying to pitch something on your site while also building a list at the same time?

What about Adsense? I am still new some I am not sure how adsense fully functions quite yet. If I had a website that ranked for "Wedding Photography Tips" for example, will I only get adsense ads for that keyword, or will I also get adsense ads for say "Wedding Photography" also?

Also how much weight does everyone put into the "SEO Competition" tool on Market Samurai? I purchased a domain with one keyword before I downloaded Market Samurai, and ran the SEO Competition tool and according to the 30 day challenge site, there are no sites with all green boxes. There are relatively no backlinks on any of the sites on the top 10 however.

There is another keyword that has less traffic per day (90 compared to 250) that has one line of green for one of the top 10 competitors. both have competition in the range of 11,000.

I am thinking of sticking with my original site, because there is more traffic with roughly the same competition. I think I am fairly savvy, and I pick up on techniques quick so I do not think the original domain will be hard to rank for.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Even this is very limited thinking. Mothers remain mothers for 18 years, then continue to worry about their children. You will have a list which you can move into other lists within your autoresponder service and keep marketing to them for years.

When you promote multiple things simultaneously you can reduce the sign-up rate to your list. You are giving them multiple choices instead of focusing your efforts and their attention on one choice. I'm not saying do not do it, I am saying be aware of the fact you are creating leaks in your funnel.

Follow your intuition on the domain name. The Challenge guidelines are meant to help very green beginners make easy choices. You are already thinking in terms of looking at the competition with open eyes.

Your list is your money, Build it the best you can.

Have opt in's on your page in several different spots.

Give a bonus on your opt in forms to entice signups, but don't put the same old regular stuff, make sure it is worth it to them to give you there email for the bonus.

send a link to the bonus, to there email. This way they have to give a real email to get the bonus. and have a thank you page that says " a link to your "bonus" item has been sent to your email.

this way, if they used a fake email, they will more than likely press back, and give a real email.

have a call to action on your opt in form, and secondary link feedback on the submit button.

Maybe a expecting mother newsletter, with a free ebook bonus for signing up " 9 things you must know before having your first baby!" and when they join the newsletter, they also join your lists.

now you just need to think of 9 things lol

just some tips to get you started Best of luck!

      All excellent ideas!

Now I need to figure out the logistics with Aweber and which wordpress plugins I will need.

What is an acceptable length of an ebook? My schedule is already stretched very thin so i will not be able to write it myself so I will have it ghostwritten. And more pages means more money.

code up a form using html/css, put your Aweber post line in it.

        and have a name/email field.

paste this form on the top of your sidebar.php file, in your template directory.

OP, first of all, you are welcome to the forum.

Your niche is a good one and it's full of money making opportunities because pregnant women are always looking for a way to stay strong and healthy throughout the period of pregnancy.

You can sell natural health supplements, women's health ebooks, and baby products to them.

Great job taking action. I'll publicly tell you something I usually would only PM in (futile?) efforts that some others would listen.

    A) There are a great number of helpful folks making 50K-1m+ on here.
    B) Most of the IM's around here suffer from the "one-more-tool" syndrome (much like a gambling habit or perhaps Quixtar et al) and make very little (I think it's like 80% make less than 1k a month online or something crazy like that).
    C) Don't listen to anyone more screwed up than you.

...That means: Many 'helpful' people have nothing to offer you. They don't even make 50k online, and some of the ones that do sure don't do it working part time. I wish, I really wish, there was some way to provide audited financials before posting advice. You could get a ranking star (based on $$$). ...that first star shouldn't come until 5k/mo IMO, but maybe 10k/mo would be better. You get the idea.

Amy said the best thing here. Do both.
If a person wants "to learn about being preggers" ...put them on a list.
If a person wants "free shipping on a boppie" ...sell them a #@*ing boppie (and ship it free : )

Different pages for different folks / kinds of traffic. Even on the different pages you still put the ability to "send me money in exchange for loot" on the "get really great reading in exchange for your email address" page and vice versa.

(IMO, grab just the email address... max subs., and that 'name in the email thing' is overrated as an opening trigger according to people who test as well... you can test that too of course in your own market ; )

I noticed you're not a War Room member... become one. Now. Ask things there. Not perfect, but better odds to be sure, of getting good info. And stay the hell out of the main forum when asking advice unless you know the cashflow of whose answering.

Cheers, and good luck. You're already way ahead of most, and you're taking further action. You'll do great.

    sharp

I NEVER put an opt in page, on an affiliate offer I am testing.

Only after I see that the page can get sales would I bother to make an optin and build a list.

Can you elaborate on that more? What is your process behind testing a niche? At what point do you offer something, or ask for email addresses?

        Hi colomedia1,

No process really. I just put up my landing page, and make sure I have plenty of links on the landing page to make it easy for the visitor to click through to the merchant's sales page.

I want to see that the product's sales page converts the clicks into sales before I try and build a list around the niche. I am not really looking for a certain number of clicks to sales or anything. All I am trying to do is see if the merchant's sales page can get any sales.

After you get a few sales, you know you have a viable market that people are buying in and now you can start trying to build a list.

What are you going to do if you put the opt-in up first and then collect all those names and try to convert them and no one buys. You are not going to know if it is the product that doesn't sell or your emails just didn't connect with your subscribers.

I test one thing at a time. First get sales and only then get opt-ins to a list if that is what you want to do.

After you see that the sales page converts, then you can ad an opt in form on the top of your existing landing page or scrap the page and just put an opt in form in its place.

        Hope that helps,
        Terry

I disagree , in a niche like this. The list would basically contain women from 18 ( or 14 lol ) to around 35-40.

you could market any number of products to this market, even if the niche doesn't pan out, the list would be valuable in thousands of different markets.

I would agree , if he was building a list on something that wasn't as scalable, but in the niche he is targeting , the list would be worth its weight in gold, if it was printed on marble. lol
