Anyone got the cure to magic bullet syndrome?

It appears I have a bad case of magic bullet syndrome.

Rather than working on my next product I'm doing everything I can to avoid taking the actions that all the courses I have bought are telling me to do.

So why is it that even with all the information we need at our fingertips we still want to fill our hard-drives with more crap that tells us what we already know?

Perhaps I should go buy a course of how to avoid procrastination to help me get over my magic bullet syndrome?

    Hi Andrew

How true, I can very much relate, as this is what I was like in the early days. In the end I personally found myself a mentor, and then just made a conscious decision to stop looking at anything else and start putting a concerted effort into one particular method.

Here's hoping you can make that mindset jump soon and find yourself a strategy you feel comfortable with.

    All the very best.

    regards
    Andy

Lot's of people seem to be having the same problem.

People want the quick fix -OR- Buying the next new product makes them feel like they are getting ahead in their business (hobby), even though they aren't.

You could always just join the Church of the Holy Procrastinators and the Later Today Saints. Or, you could buy my short, 1 page course "Beat Back Procrastination", for the low low price of only $497. But you'd better act now, because as soon as this thread is off of page one, I'm changing the price to $997. That's a $500 savings IF YOU ACT NOW!

    Man isn't that the case?

I've found for me that it's an inherent "character flaw" as it extends to a lot of things in the rest of my life.

I notice I suddenly find the ads in the mail that have been sitting on the table much more fascinating when it comes time to clean the house.

I notice I really need to re-listen to some programs I have before I "get serious" for real this time...because I might be missing something.

I notice I will "almost be ready" to do something, but then find a book is coming out by an author I love that I have to have in case I'm not up to date. So...a few days later and a trip to the bookstore will straighten it out.

Of course, things seem to get in the way of buying that book because I've found a few others and want them too...

My success has to wait until I know everything. And of course, that's always a few days, books and "browsing for answers" sessions (read: wasting time) before I embark on the journey that will finally land me everything I want.

    Ahhhhh....

This boat feels kind of crowded...but it's nice to have company.

(Even this post was easier to write than work I should be doing.)

I think it's human nature to want to seek out the shortest or easiest way to do things. But to combat that, I recommend you try to build momentum on a project (one of your own) that overcomes the need to get another "magic bullet."

I have found that one of the reasons I have bought a bit of information comes from the self-generated desire to "have something else to do" while working on projects.

We really do have most of the information we need right at our fingertips generally, and it really takes less information than we think to be able to do what we do...

...but that damn feeling kicks in once in awhile to "get something new" etc... and over a period of time we end up collecting quite a bit of information on the old hard drive or shelves.

So long as it doesn't impede progress on the important stuff, it's ok...but when it does, you have to decide what's more important... the "stuff", or your business.

I guess it's human nature, Andrew. When we have everything laid out clearly in front of us and the work starts to seem mundane, tedious and hard, there's always the temptation to think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. The problem with the market we're in is that we're continually being shown "greener grass" all around us and you have to really fight the temptation to jump ship.

You can minimize this by taking simple steps, i.e. close out your email when you're working on things and block out your "productive time". Another great thing to do for procrastinators and people with short attention spans is to go on the Pomodoro plan - this has really worked for me because it divides your productive time into more palatable bite-sized chunks!

    Hi Andrew,

The one thing that really helped me was when I realized that I needed to learn how to make a single sale before I could make a "million" sales.

It is easy to get caught up in the hype of overnight millions, but the truth is that doesn't exist for very many of us.

If you keep focused on reasonable, attainable goals you will not only find that you BUILD a stronger BUSINESS, but you will also be able to stay more focused.

I suggest that you start and implement a SINGLE system.
I have found that some of the overwhelm comes from people "picking and choosing" different parts of different systems (which leads to distraction and usually failure).

They then blame the system, when in reality, they just made up their own.

    Get Back To Work! lol

When I get distracted like that, it's sometimes because I'm not *enjoying* what I'm doing.

Sometimes you have no choice and have to power through it.

Sometimes it's a sign to change what you're doing.

If you need to power through it or it IS something you really like, but are just "off", take a break. A full break. As an example, go for a walk, and leave your cell phone behind.

DON'T think about work or anything related while you're out. No thoughts of the next step, the forum thread that's hot that you can't wait to get back to, etc.

Clear your head by taking a complete break for just a few minutes and you may be surprised how fast you jump back into being productive and put the credit card away.

It's probably one of the biggest, if not the biggest reasons for failing in the IM industry ... not taking any action and/or just jumping from one thing to the next without really mastering or completing any of them.

I don't suffer from that syndrome, but I see many that do. Focus on one project at a time and complete it. I'd stay out of the WSO forum until a project is complete.

I think it's the little voice that says "there has to be an easier.quicker/better/more profitable way to do X" that causes jumping from thing to thing.

Once you latch on to one method that works and you see results from it, it will help build confidence and momentum.

Pick something and see it all the way to the end. No matter what the results are, it will be the building block that will get you out of the shiny thing rut.

become ACCOUNTABLE to someone for task completion.

It is human nature? I don't think it is. I see it as a lack of training and understanding in the goal setting methodology and in the OVERALL thinking process.

    Consider this:

See the inherent problem with how you set up your business?

It is somewhat typical for many IMers to set up a next product situation AS OPPOSED to having a cohesive business.

We see the "gurus" (what a misnomer, but, you know whom I mean)...constantly LAUNCHING product after product. Is it because their products have such a short shelf life?

Is it because they have a list to milk? Is it because they KNOW and UNDERSTAND there are so many people who don't have a business PLAN and therefore become susceptible to the "magic bullet syndrome"?

Honestly, I don't know of ANY offline successful business person who isn't doing the work necessary to keep the business growing. The ones that operate like an IMer are the ones OUT of business.

So, it BEGINS with how you set yourself up.

If you are constantly needing to create product, and you aren't totally driven to do so, you will flounder and get frustrated.

IF you plan out your IM business, and clearly have time goals, and your plan includes the MOTIVATION to keep going, you won't have the "magic bullet syndrome".

But that is just the first half.

The second part of it is: WE aren't taught and/or we don't take the time to learn HOW to choose goals, how to PLAN, how to be motivated and most importantly, WHY we are doing things the way we do them, when there is a much better way?

It requires THINKING at the start. To clearly see the problems, the "exit" points on a project and to recognize when they come up along our highway.

The CURE for the Magic Bullet Syndrome? PAY someone enough money and then let them hold you accountable for your time or lose your money. Simple enough. And if you are a person who will just give away money without concern, then two things...

    call me.

OR recognize you are totally hopeless and go NOW and buy a WSO, OK?

Hi my name is blahblah blah and I am a magic bullet addict. When I wake in the morning I have to have a fix as soon as possible but manage to fight the urge long enough to get ready for work. So After work I jump to my email to see what kind of stuff the pushers have lined up for my addiction. I'm never disappointed, there's always some great new stuff to tempt me.

Bottom line is this is an addiction like any other. It will require the same mindset and determination to kick this addiction as any other.

Let's not buy any other new products until we meet our goals for the day, week month...

    Andrew-

Get someone else involved. It's easy to sit inside our own heads when no one else can scold us for slacking off.

Run a promotion with someone else, find a JV partner to promote your product(and set a launch date, so it *has* to be done), hire someone to stare at you and shame you into working. Recruit a friend to check in on you and make you feel guilty for not working.

It's really hard to generate motivation solely from inside yourself, all the time. Think of the most brutal workouts of your life: did they come when you were by yourself? My best(read as- kicked my own ass the most) workouts all had either a personal trainer or a friend I was competing with.

Add a little oversight to your life, so you're accountable to someone outside yourself. Buy a friend a beer if you don't finish your to do list, or your daily goal. It doesn't need to be anything formal, your own pride will pull you into line after you have to buy beers two or three nights in a row.

    Good luck!

      Hi Andrew,

guess what . You are not the only one who has this syndrome. I used to suffer from it big time.

The way that I got over it is by getting a mentor. By doing so I had a plan to work on and that alone avoided many distractions as I was always focusing on the job had to do and knew that when that task was ready I will be given another one by my mentor.

    Hi Andrew, my advice...

Forget all thje guides and WSO, that you have on your harddrive.

    1) Pick one direction - you want to go, blogbuilding
    2) Research this method and contributors for one day
    3) Pick one method to test drive, and do the businessmodel for at least one month
    4) Put in work and dedication, and use the forums for questions and guidelines.
    5) Evaluate your results
    6) stick with it or test a new businessmodel

I can 100% relate to this story.
Everytime I need to take action in my business I want to find a shortcut.
When I finally found that shortcut (at least, that's what I think at that time),
you most time feel stolen because the sales letter of the product was so
well written that you thought you bought something beautiful.
Later you find out it's total crap and have lost many, many hours of your time.
Then you can request a refund, and you need to remind the product creator of that refund because they didn't refund you within 1 month etc. etc.

The funny thing is that the only work you have done to make money
is getting that refund. You worked to get that refund, and sometimes
it even feels that you made a sale

A problem for me is also that I don't mind working for my money,
but when I hear that someone earns $300 with his blog per month,
    then I'm totally disappointed.

Working hard for just $300 per month? That sounds totally the opposite
of what the guru's are promosing and saying they will teach you.

And BAM: you're distracted again to find that magic bullet.
The biggest problem people fail isn't that they don't work hard.
    It's because of the traffic.

You can't test a new created website with 100 adwords visitors
    or a few SEO visitors.

Someone told me once: "If you're getting enough traffic but it isn't converting then you're traffic source is probably not right for your offer!"

    How true!

Anyway, I stop typing now, I can better build a blog with this information and drive
    targetted well converting traffic

Turn off the computer and grab a notepad. Write all your goals. Then strategy. Then tactics to accomplish.

Once that's done. Set a time to do those tasks.

Finally turn on the computer. Don't check your email until you finish your tasks for the day or allotted time.

Some of the most intelligent people suffer from this.

Why? Because the most intelligent people tend to over think things.

      Usually this happens because:
      • You're worried about the quality of your product. You want to learn more to make the product better.
      • You have too many ideas flowing and can't concentrate on one at a time.
      • You don't have a clue where to start.
      • You're plain lazy.
In my opinion the best way around this is to get yourself a good mentor. One who actually gives a sh*t about you succeeding.

A good mentor might not be cheap but will be worth their weight in gold. Will point you in the right direction if that is what you're lacking or simply hold you accountable for what you do if you're just lazy.

A good mentor is like a good manager in offline business. They will know how to get the best out of you.

Easier said than done, but, it is about exchanging habits. Replace whatever you are doing with a new habit. Example, if you are on WF surfing allday, hang out on clickbank or CPA sites and look at the offers. Make it an adventure. Replace tv with watching a dvd that will enhance your business. Make sure every habit is a productive one.

    Hi Warriors

Thanks for all the advice, I have made some significant strides forward over the last couple of days - I came home at lunchtime yesterday and recorded 2 camtasia videos of content, I'll do the same on Monday and the product will be completed.

Next step is use my existing contacts to pay for someone to turn my video content into a pdf so I have that as the main product and the video's as a bonus.

Once complete I'll run a WSO at 50% discount of the price it's going to be realesed to the public for - this should give me some testamonials for the salespage and the basis of my affiliate army (the product will be based on the $7 theme with 100% direct commissions).

Anyway enough wasting time here I've got to convert the videos and upload them onto the net ready for buyers to watch.

Robert, I expect good results from your mailing :-)

      Hello, Andrew ...

Paulie888 recommended The Pomodoro Method, and I would second that.
There's a free ebook you can download that explains how to use it.

It's the brainchild of one Francesco Cirillo, who "takes companies, teams and
individuals to the next level of productivity in a way that's satisfying and fun."

Cirillo has also developed "The Klog," where all elements are seemlessly
integrated into one cohesive whole ... see in particular his "social map" ...

Tony Robbins said once that he believes there's no such thing as a
lazy person. There's just people with uninspiring goals.

Not everyone responds to The Protestant Ethic ...
      "I get up every morning
and wash my neck and go off to work. What's the matter with you, that
      you can't do the same?"

Some people hear a different drummer ... maybe you're one of them.

I knew a guy once who tried a list of ways as long as your arm in an effort
to make money and get out of the slums in the city where he lived. His
family kept saying, "Why don't you just get a job in the Post Office?"

One day when we were just kicking back, I happened to mention the idea
of getting under contract vacant land that was "in the path of progress"
and offering it to a developer for 50% of the ultimate selling price, once
an engineering firm had completed all the feasibility studies and gotten
      all the appropriate permits.

It's rather a complex model on the developer's end, but for the bird dog
it's pretty simple, and he took to it like a duck takes to water. His end
of it, when all the dust settled, was $50 million dollars!

He could have made the full $100 million if he'd been in a position to
cash out the original owner and fund the feasibility study, but he wasn't,
so he jv'd with a real estate investor, who in turn sold it to a developer,
who in turn built a shopping center with a WalMart in it and probably
      made billions.

If you're wondering whether my friend "retired" on his millions, the answer
is no, he didn't. He'd found his métier, you see. He'd discovered that he
*loved* making things *happen* ... that he had a special talent for
bringing together two parties who each had something the other needed.

When it comes to business opportunities -- including but not limited to
internet marketing ones -- there's a couple of key questions to ask:
      (1) how much is this thing gonna cost me; and (2) what do I gotta
*do* to make all this money?

Maybe you don't *want* to do what you gotta do!

Maybe you'd rather do something *else* !!!
In which case, the sooner you find out what it is, the better.

      Most people don't know what they want;
they just know that what they got ain't it!

A little trick I've used very successfully with certain clients is this:

Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle.
Up at the top of the left column, write "Don't Want"
and write "Do Want" at the top of the right column.

      Then list on the left
all the things you don't want or don't like.
You can even include some things you hate!
When you're done doing that, put the paper in a drawer.

Tomorrow, take it out of the drawer and, item by item, write down
on the right side whatever the *opposite* is of the thing on the left
that you don't want or don't like.

It may twist your brain a bit to do this in some cases, but persevere.
The finished list, when you fold back the left side of it out of sight,
may very well surprise you. There may be more information there
about what you really want -- and what you're really good at --
than you've ever had in one place before.

Somewhere in that list of what you really want and what you're
really good at will be the kernel of an idea that will make your fortune,
as much because you'll be inspired to pursue it as for any other reason.

When you are "in spirit" things seem almost effortless,
whereas when you are "in ego" they seem laborious.

That's how you can tell whether or not you're on the right path for you.

      Regards, Elizabeth ...

Dude, don't become the self-help junkie. Stop buying stuff but start applying action. Pure information won't get you anywhere. How to do it? Just do it.

    That is all.

Andrew, that's an awesome observation! WHen you find it, please let the rest of us know...for me, it's like going to Home Depot or Best Buy...I just can't help myself. BUT, I KNOW, if I can pick up just ONE thing useful and it makes my income rise 5%, I'm ahead.

People have already told you to take action, which I will obviously echo. But you simply must know that there is no magic pill or magic bullet to making money online. It takes hard work. If you can't or don't want to do the boring and repetitive tasks, outsource them to people that can or do want to.

what seems to work for me, most the time, is keep too busy writing, making sites and blogs, building links, and building business relationships.

It helps to ignore much of the email. Establish priorities around what makes money. Create implementation plans with benchmarks and do your best to stick to them.

I love learning and discovering so it is no easy task for me to stick to any of this but to the degree I do I make progress. I also have the same attention span of most people who grew up with a television in the middle of the living room, a short one. I canceled cable TV a few years ago to thwart my addiction. Whatever weakness I have I have to work to overcome so I applaud you for asking this question.

It feels good to build and create sites and posts I can see the results of.

This happens to everyone from time to time.
Best advice I can give is PLAN your WORK and WORK your PLAN.

Set a daily task list and complete it. The pyramids took over hundred years to build, but stone by stone it was done.
