(My) wordpress confusion... A simple(?) question...

Ok...

Now I'm confused about what 'wordpress' is.

I THOUGHT it was like blogger. A simple to use, web-based 'service' that allowed anyone ot establish a blog simply+ easily. A free service. I thought I remember even opening an account a year or two ago (never used it cuz I use blogger).

Now I go there (wordpress.org) and I see one must install it first, etc. The 'famous' 5-minute install. I'm not a techie, and I found the 'install' to be NOT easy or simple!!

So, my question is, what IS 'wordpress?'

I thought I know, but now I'm confused.

Also, why (oh why) does the 'install' (apparently) require three advanced IT degrees to accomplish?!?!

Isn't there a way to go click, click, click + be done with it?

Please advise.

Thanks!

Try wordpress.com instead. Wordpress.org is available for people who want to host wordpress on their own server. Wordpress.com is for people who just want to start blogging, much like blogger.

well actually the install is pretty esy if your webhosting company has cpanel and fantastico...and it is basically click click done.

if you don't want to install anything you can always go to wordpress.com and get a free blog there...but be carefull because they don't really accept "affiliate blogs"

    Hi TW,

Wordpress is the easiest to use. I had no problem installing using the 1 step install.

Question for you. Do you have your own hosting account/domain ?

If you do, the solution is simple.

Log into your hosting account & go to your Fantastico area.

Click on wordpress. Pick the domain you want it installed on.

Fill in your username, password, email, title of your blog, & description.

    Click install.

Your host does it for you automatically & you can have your blog set up in 5 minutes top.

Or, if you want someone to install it for you, I do installs of the latest version, along with the Top PlugIns, for $25.

    Hi TW,

For beginner, it may take more time to install. It gets easier next time.

    Just follow the steps:

    1. in your domain cpanel eg yourdomain.com/cpanel, go to Fantastico, click on install Wordpress

    2. set a username and password for it.

    3. it should be done

    4. to access your wordpress dashboard to start posting, change your design, just go to yourdomain.com/wp-admin and use the same login name and password to access it.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    John

Thanks -- that helps me out a lot.

I do have a hosting co that allows fantastico, etc. I TRIED TO go through those steps --- and I think that's how I ended up at the WP.org site!

I'll try again -- but these companies really should make it CLEAR, CLEAR, CLEAR what to do -- step-by-step in a way that assumes the user KNOWS ***NOTHING*** -- and I mean NOTHING. Many of them seem incapable of viewing the teaching process in that way.

I remember seeing a beginner's tutorial about some page-building software. The vid BEGAN by saying, "Ok, first, insert a table, then..." And (at that point in my learning curve), I was sitting there thinking, "WHAT'S A TABLE?!?" -- couldn't even get past the first sentence!!

Note to anyone making training vids, etc. When people claim to be 'idiots' when it comes to tech stuff... BELIEVE THEM! Teach stuff in a way that assumes they know NOTHING!

DON'T USE FANTASTICO!!! In your C-Panel, look for Simple Scripts and there should be a WordPress installer there. The Fantastico version is outdated by several versions and can cause a lot of problems, which may be partly why you can't get it to work.

If you use the Simple Scripts installer, all you really need to do is fill in the name of your domain. Follow the prompts and go slow, use the default settings, and it should work fine. You can always delete the whole thing and start over if you make a mess (that's me talking from experience, I think it took 3 tries to get it right the first time, after that it's a snap).

That is not very accurate. That depends on the host. A good host (like Hostgator) is normally up to date with current versions and does not cause any problems (278 installs and counting!). A bad host (too many to name) can be WAY outdated.

I agree, it really depends on the host. Just try to explore on WP and you'll get to enjoy it. I'm enjoying it now.
