Best Way to Handle Site Change

I've got a website that I setup as a free article site many years ago and it continues to get steady hits every month.
I'm wanting to change the website into a membership site with a similar but a bit different topic and completely change the platform from joomla to wordpress.
What is the best way to handle the current content?
Do I just remove it completely, do I copy the content over to my personal blog and put a redirect so people who find it still end up somewhere? or .... open to suggestions.
The new membership site is going to take some time to be setup, so if I remove the content and put a new coming soon page I feel its wasted visitors I could have done something with.
